5 Candidates File For Northville School Board Seats

Board President Dottie Garrity is not running for re-election.

Five people have filed for three seats that will be open in the November election on Northville's school board.

The five people who submitted documentation before the Aug. 14 deadline are:

  • Michael Barrett
  • Roland Hwang
  • Cyndy Jankowski
  • Adam Phelps
  • Matthew Wilk

Barrett and Hwang interviewed for the board-appointed interim seats currently held by Jankowski and Wilk. Jankowski was appointed to replace Joan Wadsworth and Wilk was appointed to replace Anita Bartschat.

Currrent school board president Dottie Garrity will not be seeking re-election following the end of her first term.

"I really enjoyed my time on the board but at this point it’s just time for me to pursue other options in my life," she said.

Garrity explained that it's a very time-consuming job and isn't sure she'd be able to give it the time her duties would require. She added that she was glad five others filed to seek the position.

"Campaigning makes for a well-rounded board member," she said. "It allows you to get out and meet people."

This November, with three open seats, voters will be able to confirm the current Board's appointments of Cindy Jankowski and Matthew Wilk, AND finally give Roland Hwang the chance to serve the Northville Public Schools.

Mr. Hwang is an outstanding candidate, more than qualified for the position.

I second the comments by Herb Helzer with regard to Roland Hwang. Roland understands that we must provide our students with an education that is competitive in today's global economy. He looks to the future. One example is Roland's suggestion that we offer Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. This is the kind of insight and push that we need in Northville. I will be voting for Roland Hwang for the Northville School Board.
