Bites Nearby: In Northville, Mediterranean Flavors Meet French Flair

Le George serves up succulent dishes in the heart of downtown Northville.

It was less than a year ago that Le George opened at 124 E. Main St. in downtown Northville. The name has a french flair which explains the influence put on the Middle Eastern food served here.

In fact, the restaurant bills itself as a “mediterranean bistro” and the menu describes the goal of creating a cosmopolitan, modern, bubbly atmosphere.

It was half off a bottle of wine Wednesday that finally lured me to this cozy store front location where I sampled a variety of offerings from the menu.

The hummus was savory and the warm pita bread it is served with makes a perfect accompaniment. In fact those breads, served with a garlic butter, included with all meals, alone are worth the trip.  A cup of red lenti soup, called potage, costs $3.50 and there is also baba ganuj offered as an appetizer for $7.75.  The main courses include a variety of meat, poultry, seafood and vegetarian offerings including a kabab brochette with tenderloin or lamb for $18.75 and shawarma served with rotisserie chicken for $14.75.

Lunch specials average $7 to $11  and you can even get a hamburger or “le burger” as it says on the menu for $7.75 served with cole slaw and frites maison (fries.) There are several desserts to choose from including Beirut Nights, a crème brule type dessert with a hint of rose water for $4.25.

This seems like a good restaurant to check out. Any recommendations? What's its best dish?

The chicken shwarama sandwich is great, but you really can't go wrong. The cheese pastry cigarettes are an awesome appetizer as well.

This is by far the best restaurant in the area. If I had to pick one place to eat from for the rest of my life, this would be it! Not only is the food fantastic, but the staff is wonderful. Everyone is smiling and open. George, the owner, is always on the floor talking to customers, and he is so warm and caring. The poulet provencal (spelling may be a bit off) is my favorite dish by far, but as Jennifer said, you really can't go wrong. The kafta brochette is also amazing, if you are looking for red meat. I recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family because it is simply the best spot in town.
