Former NHL players will hit the ice Saturday for a charitable cause.
The Red Wings Alumni Association is teaming up with Troy athletes in a charity game to benefit the Salvation Army's Bed & Bread Club Radiothon, which will air Feb. 24 on WJR, 760-AM. The Salvation Army's Bed & Bread program serves thousands of meals to the hungry each day and provides shelter for the homeless.
Former Red Wings expected to play Saturday include Eddie Mio, John Ogrodnick, Brent Fedyk, Shawn Burr and John Finstrom. They will play against coaches and alumni from the Oakland Junior Grizzlies, Troy Sting and Troy Youth Hockey Association. The game will start at 8 p.m. at the Troy Sports Center.
George Bowman, secretary for the Red Wings Alumni Association, said this is one of many charity events the former players participate in each year. He said the event usually sells out.
"It's all about the Salvation Army and trying to feed the needy," Bowman said. "We’re trying to help out in any way we can."
