More than 30 participants sat in barber chairs Sunday at the Claddagh Irish Pub in Livonia to have their heads shaved while raising more than $25,000 for children's cancer research.

Volunteers for the fundraiser, which benefited the St. Baldrick's Foundation, sought donations in their name for the charity before losing their hair for the cause.

More than 250 attended the event to support friends and family members who volunteered for the drastic makeover at the hands of stylists from Fantastic Sams in Plymouth.

Plymouth native — and Patch blogger — Abigail Stonerook led all volunteers by raising nearly $10,000 by the end of the event, accounting for nearly half of its total intake while losing her long blonde locks. She said she raised about $800 on the eve of the event with a fundraiser at Dairy King in downtown Plymouth, where she had previously worked.

Stonerook, who was joined onstage by her brother and fellow volunteer, Nick Stonerook of Plymouth, estimated it could take up to 2-3 years to grow her hair back to its previous length.

Danielle Quarrella, a junior at Chippewa Valley High School, volunteered her shoulder-length hair just one week shy of her school prom.

Plymouth Patch and Canton Patch editor John McKay also volunteered for the event. Patch advertising manager Susanne Spruit took the first swipe at McKay's hair with the hair clippers.

Eric Bacyinski, deputy clerk for Plymouth Township, organized the event said this year's event raised about twice as much as the previous year's event. This was Bacyinski's second year organizing the fundraiser and fourth year participating in the St. Baldrick's Foundation's head-shaving events.
