In Brief: Northville School Board Recalls Teachers, Approves Policy Change

Here are a few of the items discussed Tuesday night at the school board's meeting.

Sexual orientation added to non-discrimination policy

In addition to language that prohibits various types of discrimination – on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, religion, height, weight, marital status, handicap or disability – the new policy will add sexual orientation to that list. The change was unanimously approved.

The district approved two other policy changes, one regarding legal services and another regarding conflicts of interests for administrators.

Teachers, paraprofessionals recalled

Earlier this year, the school board voted to recall 26 of the 52.5 teacher full time equivalent (FTE) positions eliminated following budget cuts.

At that time, there was uncertainty about some of the positions. And since then several teachers volunteered to go part-time or declined being recalled, director of human resources David Rodgers told the board.

The following teachers', some of whom were previously partial recalls, FTEs were increased to full-time status:

  • Jeffrey Balagna
  • Kathryn Colaluca
  • Sarah Debien
  • Catherine Gibson
  • Catherine Pinkelman
  • Shannon Torres

Other teacher recalls include:

  • Tara Fortino
  • Jennifer Hart
  • Beth Richert
  • Joseph Rohroff
  • Candace Stafiej
  • Constance Wall

Recalled paraprofessionals, who were laid off in June, are:

  • Mary Clough
  • Roxanne Edge
  • Tamara Patterson
  • Kiersten Plymale
  • William Reynolds

One paraprofessional resigned, declining the recall and another remains laid off.
