Possible charity fraud reported at Hiller's
The store director at Hiller's Market noticed something was amiss when a man claiming to be soliciting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) showed up at the Center Street store, according to a city of Northville police report.
The store director said she recognized the man on Sept. 4 from previous solicitations for another organization and asked him for identification and proof that he was soliciting on the non-profit's behalf, she told police. She got the man's name from his driver's license and called the non-profit. According to the police report, they told her the MDA has never received donations from the man. He left before police arrived.
The man is now banned from the property and police warn that this may have been a charity fraud. For tips on how to identify illegitimate charity solicitations, see our previous alert.
