Northville Teen Accused of Asking 11-Year-Old Boy to Perform Sex Act
The teen, Joseph Miklos, is said to hang around boys of the same age group, police say.
An 18-year-old Northville man is accused of inviting an 11-year-old boy to his house where he "engaged in unwanted sexual contact," according to city of Northville police.
The teen, Joseph Miklos, and boy were in the basement of the house on July 25 when Miklos is accused of asking the 11-year-old to sodomize him, according to a city press release. The boy refused.
"It is alleged that Miklos grabbed him around the back of the head and pushed him onto his stomach and held him down on the couch," according to the press release. "Miklos then pulled the 11-year-old's pants and underwear down exposing his buttocks."
Miklos is accused of then performing an act of "unwanted sexual contact," though the boy was not sodomized, according to police.
The boy's father, noticing strange behavior including sleep disturbances, asked the boy about what was bothering him. After learning of what happened to his son, he reported it to police.
Miklos is reported to hang out with several boys in the same age group in the McDonald Drive area, Police Chief Gary Goss said.
"Parents need to be mindful of who their children are hanging out with," he said. "If they suspect their child has had contact with this individual, they may want to talk to them."
A warrant was issued for Miklos in this case. He turned himself in and was arraigned on Aug. 8. According to the press release, a pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20 in the 35th District Court.

I wonder what has happened in this young man's past that would motivate him to do that. I'm definitely not excusing his actions, but I'm curious to hear the other side of the story.

I am wondering the same thing. I am also curious why the author of this article felt that it was necessary to name the young man and include his picture. I do not see what purpose it served other than making the Northville Patch into our very own "Northville Enquirer". The author obviously sees the need to not only state that he is the accused, but it seems to me that she has also chosen to convict him! I am certainly not trying to defend his actions, but I think he should be tried in our courts and not in the Northville Patch!!!!

Linda- This is news. The article also quotes the police chief: "'Parents need to be mindful of who their children are hanging out with,' he said. 'If they suspect their child has had contact with this individual, they may want to talk to them.'" How would a parent know if their child had contact with this individual without the reporter posting his name and a picture? The reporter is not making any accusations by including those pieces of information. He is legally an adult, this is standard procedure.

Thanks for the comments and feedback. I definitely want to tell the other side of this story. And I can assure you that if he is exonerated, we will do a story on that too. The intent of this article is to provide information to parents about what the teen was accused of so that parents can talk to their children if they have had contact with this teen. Parents would have no way to identify the man unless his name and picture were included.
However, if you feel very strongly about this issue, feel free to disagree with me in a letter to the editor. I would be happy to publish it. Just send it to nancy.kelsey@patch.com.

Also, one comment was not approved because it uses language in violation of our Patch terms of agreement. Two others were not approved because they contain information that is unverifiable at this time about the accused.

This is a tough one, but I am certain that if this teen does turn out to be innocent, no after-the-fact retraction of information by the Press will restore to him what has been done by this exposure. Guilty or not, I fear the kind of vigilantism that this kind of information can provoke.

Wake up and get a grip folks. Why is there no sympathy for the 11-year old who will be scarred for life? Just because you live in Northville does not mean this type of predatory behavior has not taken place in the past in this town. This 18-year old is not a juvenile anymore, and if found guilty, needs to be held accountable for this.

My heart goes out the the 11 year old. How brave of him to tell his father. Who knows how many others he may have saved.

I personally knew the kid while he was growing up. He always was a little different and obnoxious. his parents payed little attention to him compared to his older siblings who weren't adopted like he was. This is a shame and i hope both boys will turn out okay and also hope that no one else was involved.

Where are the parents of these young boys? Letting an 11 year old hang out with an 18 year old is rarely a good idea. 18 year olds "know" things that many people would not want their 11 year old talking about or involved in. I appreciate the well written article that gives detail that will help people protect their children. The poor little boy - nightmares and odd behavior is just the start of the affects this will have on him the rest of his life.

Northville Patch appreciates feedback on any story. Comments that will not be posted here include unverifiable accusations about the accused or speculations about his mental state or sexual orientation. Speculative comments about the 11-year-old accuser will also be deleted. This is a very special case which warrants special handling of the comments section. Last time I checked a person is innocent until PROVEN guilty. There have been a lot of assumptions about the guilt of this young man. Shame on those who would prejudge this case without ANY knowledge. A false accusation is devastating too! Reporting should be purely factual and avoid any suggestion of guilt before a trial on the issues. This is vigilantism and it is wrong.

Thanks for the feedback. I disagree. With attributions to police info throughout, I'm not sure what specifically it is that you think I've written that suggests guilt. The fact that we published the info at all? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this so that I better understand your statement. Thanks again.

This article, among others in the media, include nothing but vague police statements that imply guilt. As you can see just from the comments on here and other articles, people have already convicted him of this alleged crime without any facts or knowledge of what actually transpired or knowing anything about either party involved. Articles like this do nothing but jeopardize the integrity of any legal proceedings that are to take place. That is what I mean by my previous statement.

Who knows if the boy was even telling the truth! The 18 year old boy isn't guilty untill proven so! So everyone needs to lay off and here his side of the story to you all have no reason to make him look bad!

Since when does the spread of knowledge purport retribution? It's rather bold to blame an impartial news report for kick-starting any alleged act of vigilantism that may occur. Information is a free read for anyone, but what they do with it is their own decision, just as a gun or baseball bat cannot be held responsible for what its wielder does.

This article has been bothering me since I first read it for so many reasons, first and foremost for all involved the victim, the accused and their families. I understand that you have the right to publish this story in any manner you see fit, it is news. My feeling is that it could have been handled more delicately. The majority of police news that you report on does not include names or pictures of the accused. My feeling is that you could have reported the story and mentioned that it happened in the McDonald Street area and left it at that. Armed with that information parents could just as easily had a discussion with their children without having to expose the accused. Yes, this young man is of legal age but he is still a teenager. Northville is a small town and I'm afraid whether or not he is guilty he and his reputation has already been thrown to the wolves. People are not forgiving when it comes to accusations such as these and this story will not easily be forgotten no matter the outcome. If this young man did what he is accused of it will be dealt with in an appropriate manner. There may be aspects to this story that you don't know or could truly understand. Northville is a small community, I'm sure the police department would have been able to reach out to other aquantinces of this boy without The Patch having to release a name and photo.

Wake up people we live in America it doesn't matter if this kid did or did not do it there was obviously enough evidence for the police to issue a warrant and if you didn't know there are already magazines you can find at the party store that are filled with accused people that have been arrested but not convicted. As a parent myself I would want to know the name of the accused simply because giving the area in which the incident occurred doesn't necessarily mean your going to know your child had any interaction with this adult. Having a name might have more of an impact as a reaction when you mention it to your child or your child could have possibly mentioned his name in the past.

Andy is completely right, I may not be a parent, but if I was I would expect a picture of the kid being accused because he might have been my child's friend, and if something had happened to my kid we could provide more information. It is good to know what kind of people live in your area, and who to stay away from.
It he ends up innocent, that's great for him, but if he doesn't, I'd want to know who he is so I could question my kids or let other parents know.
