Northville School Bus Slides off Road Into Tree

Nobody was injured on the bus heading to Winchester Elementary School Tuesday morning.

A Northville school bus heading to Winchester Elementary School slid off the roadway and into a tree on Franklin Road Tuesday morning, according to an email from the Winchester listserv.

None of the 18 students on the bus were injured and they were able to board another bus to school.

The email from the district gives details on what happened in the incident:

For your awareness, there was a bus incident involving Bus N resulting from icy road conditions. The vehicle was driven by an experienced driver, and was on Franklin when it started to slide. The bus slid off the road sideways, into a tree, and came to a stop. No student or adult injuries were reported. At the time, the bus was carrying 18 students. Police arrived at the scene, and requested that students disembark the bus. These students then walked to the Meads Mill parking lot, and loaded another District bus to complete the route to Winchester.  Students arrived at school at approximately 9:00 a.m., and continued with their regular school day. If you have any questions or concerns after speaking with your child, please contact the Transportation Department at 248-344-8470.

I am curious to see who this driver is. My husband and I saw saw a maniac bus driver for northville almost get into another wreck. It was Jan. 9th when there was black ice everywhere. He pulled out into a lot of oncoming traffic from the liquer store on 8 mile. This was about 9am, no kids in the bus. Then proceeded to blow past us going about 10-15 mph over the speed limit through the school zone on 8 mile. There was a wreck on 8 mile with 3 cars pilled up so everyone slowed down. Not him, he passed another school bus that was infront of him, lost control, slid, went sideways to miss the wreck, almost took out the other school bus. I was hoping the other bus would report him. I belive it was bus 633 but cant be for sure.

If this was as you described it; then a more fitting way to handle it would be to call the police. Never allow yourself to rely on another to make a call such as this. A bus number really gives little information, how about a license plate?

I don't remember these things happening when the bus drivers worked for the school district. Now?

I can remember a few times when situations like this have happened involving Northville School buses. Although I was, and still am, against the move to privatization, I doubt that this factors into this incident. This was caused by icy, unpaved, roads. Thank goodness that no one was hurt.

There were incidents with the drivers, prior to privatization. When they were reported to NPS Transportation parents were treated like the boy who cried wolf. The drivers were protected and allowed to continue their risky driving. Since privatization I have witnessed much better driving habits. Also, the Transportation Department now treats parents with respect and actually addresses concerns in a thorough manner.

....cont'd: This doesn't mean the drivers are now perfect, rather it signals the Department's new willingness to address issues in a thorough manner.

Gail: In my experiences with the Transportation Department I must respectfully insist that you are sadly mistaken. Before Privatization every concern or question I had was promptly and courteously addressed in a single phone call, or in one case an email. With Privatization I have been belittled and in the two cases I called about, I had to take it to the principal for action. Is it coincidence that another "incident" was reported in the patch today, or is it a sign of something more sinister (lol)?

Hello Denise, I'm not sure how you glean that I hate unions from my comments; I simply stated what I have personally observed. I don't understand how you feel comfortable accusing me of hating; I don't find the accusation funny. Gail

Boiling: I am not sadly mistaken, and am curious why you would accuse me writing a non-truth. I wrote of personal experiences that I, and my neighbors, have had. I would not be bold enough to call you sadly mistaken either. I believe that your experiences are your experiences. I simply stated fact. Because you did not personally experience what I did, does not make either one of us more correct or more incorrect. I don't understand why you feel I am sadly mistaken about my own dealings with NPS Transportation. During one series of issues in our neighborhood we had to call the Northville Police Department because the bus driver's poor driving habits were not being addressed by Transportation. Since the buses have been privatized, I have noticed safer driving habits from the drivers - period. Also, when I have had to call Transportation (after privatization) for non-driving related issues, I was treated with respect and the issue was quickly resolved. I had a duplicate issue prior to privatization and was treated very poorly and the issue was not resolved.

Gail: I make no apology, my complaints and experiences are well documented. The current system lacks accountability at the top. When I have called, regarding practices that would harm the passengers, I was treated with disrespect and the people who answered the phone treated me with contempt. Now with over my 35+ years in Northville, and a few calls to the Transportation Department before the privatization, I always found help people who seemed to have a genuine eagerness to help. I'm not condemning everyone in the current department, but I continue to get the runaround from the managers. BTW I didn't call you out as an untruthful person, I simply feel that you are wrong what are asserting.
