Pet Adoption Event Draws Hundreds to Northville's Ford Field

Several dog rescue groups brought out their pups and dogs to mingle with the public in the hopes of putting them in forever homes.

It was a dog day at Saturday afternoon.

The first Puppy Love - A Dog Adoption Fair was held, bringing dozens of puppies and dogs to the park. Event organizer James Gietzen said he was pleased with the turnout and plans to make it an annual fair.

"The hope is that the dogs find a new home," he said. In most cases, he added, the dogs would be euthanized because they cannot be placed with a permanent family. That's where the rescue groups step in.

Kathy Caulfied, of Last Day Dog Rescue in Livonia, said that in recent years there has been a rise in the rescue dog population, due to family pets that owners can no longer care for. Groups like hers keep pets with volunteer foster parents until a forever home can be found.
