Obama, South Korean President to Tour GM Orion Assembly Plant Friday

Visit comes days after Congress OKs free trade agreement with South Korea, which the president says will boost auto exports.

President Barack Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will tour the General Motors assembly plant in Orion together Friday, according to a press release from the White House.

"(They) will be touring briefly a few of the operations, and then both presidents will be making remarks" on the recent trade agreement between the United States and South Korea, General Motors spokeswoman Kim Carpenter said. The tour is not open to the public.

The plant tour comes just days after Congress approved the free trade agreement with South Korea

GM began producing the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic at the Orion Township plant a few weeks ago and will soon begin producing the Buick Verano. The plant, which was closed between 2009 and 2011 after GM filed for bankruptcy protection, employs more than 1,700 people, according to GM.

Since it opened in 1983, the plant has built more than 4.6 million vehicles for General Motors.
