Proposed Northville Mega Church Shifts Plan

Triumph Church, which owns property on Beck Road in Northville Township, takes the position that it is not subject to a special land use permit requirement for religious institutions.

The Northville Township Planning Commission removed discussion of the special land use and site plan approval of Triumph Church from its agenda at Tuesday night's meeting.

Planning Commission Chair Robert Nix said this was done at the applicant's request. The Christian "mega church" was hoping to get special land use approval as a religious institution to open a location on Beck Road, between Five and Six Mile roads. However, the church has now involved a lawyer, he said.

"Their lawyer has taken the position that they are not subject to the special land use permit," Nix said.

He said the township's lawyer is discussing the matter with the church's lawyer, and he is optimistic that the issue will be resolved.

Tom: The problem at the Ward Church site was the density of buildings, including the height of the sanctuary spire and some senior housing, unlike this site requesting a change in the zoning. It’s clear; this site has been zoned for residential use, not a business or non-conforming special use for a church. This group purchased the site either unknowingly, or they thought that they could ram this down the throats of “sleepy old Northville”. But whatever the case, the Township needs to standby their zoning.
