Should Snyder Sign Bill Allowing Concealed Weapons in Schools?
On Friday, a gunman killed at least 27 at a school in Newtown, CT. Meanwhile in Michigan, Gov. Snyder has a bill on his desk that would allow some concealed guns in schools. What do you think?
Should Michigan's governor sign a bill on is desk that would allow concealed weapons in former no-gun zones, like schools?
The question is timely for two reasons:
- Under legislation that passed the House and Senate in Michigan this week, gun owners with concealed weapon permits could carry a gun into schools, daycares, hospitals or public arenas if they get extra training. The bill is awaiting Gov. Rick Snyder's signature, according to MLive.
- And on Friday, a gunman opened fire in a school in Newtown, CT, killing at least 27 at an elementary school, including 18 children.
What do you think of the legislation? Should the governor sign it? Answer our poll and tell us in comments.

If the people who are supposed to be in a place may be armed, it will inhibit those who are not supposed to be in the place. If one of the teachers had been packing today, it might have turned out differently. if it was known that several might be packing, it might not have happened at all

Its either carry, or abandon the most basic human right known to every civilized nation in the world, the right of self defence....or would you rather die like a bleating sheep
gurgling help in your own blood? Wow. Smart thinking you have there.

You probably believe that another law or two would have stopped this guy, right? Do you think he obeyed all the other laws already in place while he accomplished his evil?

Has not allowing citizens to defend themselves worked? Why not allow those who are licensed and trained to carry handguns? They would acted as guardians of their fellow man.

Iraq is SAFER than USA! The criminals without permits are killing ppl, virtually NO ccw permit holders kill ppl because the screening is JUST AS INTENSE as Police officer background checks. People who know nothing should keep quiet lest their ignorance be seen by ALL! Anybody who thinks it's easy to get a ccw license in Michigan is SEVERELY mistaken! Take guns away from ccw holders & the ONLY ones with guns will be the criminals & the cops, which may find your family stiff & cold a week AFTER the criminal leaves. If just ONE teacher or worker at that school had a ccw, there may have been ZERO shootings simply because the shooter KNEW his PREY were defenseless.

If the teachers started firing back, there would have been even more deaths. More innocent people are killed in households with guns than in those without. Most mentally ill people are not violent, but if the shooter was mentally ill, it would have been easier and quicker for him to get a gun than to get treatment.

I made an assertion. I didn't tell lies. So I will not respond to your demand. If you have hard, unbiased scientific data that challenge my assertions, please present it in a respectful way, and I will consider it. If not, I will assume that my assertions are merely contrary to your beliefs.

I'm with you, Steve - plus, all these contributors that say if one teacher had a gun, they would have killed this shooter. I beg to differ. He was wearing a bullet proof vest! The teacher that shot at him would have been killed along with everyone else.

As opposed to what, Denise?
Every teacher he encountered was killed.
He killed himself as soon as the first responders showed up and he encountered resistance.
If he'd encountered resistance sooner, he likely would have killed himself sooner.
Think about it....don't just "feel" about it.
When you call the cops...you are hoping that a good guy shows up with a gun. Wouldn't it be better if the good guy with a gun were already there?

Please read John Lott's book, "More Guns, Less Crime". Gorge yourself on facts, then come back with your tail between your legs and admit you are wrong. Every day, people in America use guns to defend themselves from criminals in their businesses and homes. It's just that the media doesn't want you to know that because they have an agenda, which is to pull the wool over the eyes of well meaning people such as yourself. If you take guns from law abiding citizens, who will have guns?

Thanks Denise. Also a few other things I thought about it. He and many others like him kill themselves or commit suicide by police after their rampage. If the shooter knew the staff was armed, that would be no deterrent, and it might even be an incentive. Our Teaparty congressman-elect was a high school teacher at one time. He said he didn't like kids and wanted to make them cry. If he could legally bring a gun into school that would create a very dangerous situation. It wouldn't surprise me too if he was carrying back then as well. The big problem in this country is that we have a weapons-crazy culture in which guns are worshipped, and murdered children are collateral damage.

The school shooter committed the bulk of the carnage in about two minutes with a military style ASSAULT weapon that was LEGALLY purchased by his mother. How was a kindergarten teacher to defend against that? Did the shooter's mother (gun owner) succeed at defending herself or the 27 people in that school?

It needs to be passed!!!! Hands down a lunatic crazed phsyco will get a weapon no matter wut it takes!!! If more people who are capable and trained carry guns in these so called pistol free zones then maybe these crimes wouldnt be able to escalate to a mass murder such as school, theatres and so on am i making my point clear???? You mostly see this sick hanous crime happening in our pistol free zones so if ur not for it then well u dont care for the safety of your children. Id be happy to know that my son or daughters teacher is packin

This is reaching an absurd level. While I am not characterizing the views of anyone in this discussion other than what they (we) have written, I have been following the discussion elsewhere as well. I have seen that some people who advocate arming teachers are the same people who in other contexts refer to teachers as left-wing, communist, union thugs. You sure you want to arm them? Many of the people who say the issue in Newtown (and other sites of mass murder) was mental illness, not guns are the same people who support drastic funding cuts for mental health services. So are you willing to accept background checks? Or are you willing to pay for increased and improved mental health services through your tax dollars or higher insurance premiums? You can't have it both ways.
