It is expected to cost $650,000 to replace Thaddeus McCotter following his resignation in early July.
The former U.S. representative said in a statement following his decision to leave office: "for the first time, severed the necessary harmony between the needs of my constituency and of my family. As this harmony is required to serve, its absence requires I leave."
Here's a look at what people online have to say about him.

If he wasn't up to the job, McCotter did the right thing by resigning and letting someone more willing handle the duties. I just wish Gov. Snyder would've appointed someone (not sure if he is allowed to, hopefully someone else knows) and not held an election for such a short term.

Governors can fill U.S. Senate seats by appointment, but federal representatives can be replaced only by an election, as specified in Article I of the U.S. Constitution (Section 2, Clause 4).

I'm ecstatic that McCotter finally quit. I do hope his replacement will have different political views, or I will have to make phone calls and sign petitions again, cutting into my limited leisure time...

I personally wish McCotter would have just gone underground and pretended to serve out his term rather than resign. Let's be honest: whoever gets elected to serve out the last two months of McCotter's term isn't going to be able to accomplish diddly squat anyway. So having McCotter stay in office and accomplish nothing would be a wash, cynical but true.
Bill Bullard (Oakland County clerk) explains at a meeting last night that the special election to fill the remaining unexpired portion of McCotter's seat/term will require voters from the "old" 11th district to cast the votes. Whereas, the August primary and the November general election are to fill the going-forward seat for the "new" redrawn 11th district. Talk about utterly confusing. Even for a voter who is very informed, it is quite likely that they will be confused. Think about the folks that USED TO be in the 11th district who aren't anymore (because the shifts in population in the 2010 census resulted in a redrawing of the Congressional district lines for this 2012 election). They are thinking they don't need to worry about the 11th district anymore because they've been redistricted into e.g. 39th where Hanson Clark and Gary Peters are slugging it out. But these "old 11th district" voters do indeed need to vote in the special election. Crimeny!
