Woman Arrested on Drunk Driving Charges With .17 Percent BAC

The following information was provided by Northville Township Police. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

Northville Township Police began following a red 2006 Pontiac G6 on March 2 at Seven Mile and Haggerty roads for a broken headlight and observed the driver weaving the vehicle back and forth in her lane while driving westbound before trying to turn left onto Northridge Road, which is not possible at that intersection. According to the report, when the woman was unable to turn left, she drove into the eastbound lane, when she was stopped by police.

When police made contact with the driver, the officer could detect a strong odor of alcohol from the woman, who also had bloodshot and glassy eyes and slurred speech, the report indicated.

The woman admitted to having two beers and a couple of shots about an hour before and felt “buzzed,” but told police she thought she was OK to drive.

According to the report, the woman struggled during field sobriety tests and registered a .153 percent blood alcohol content in a preliminary breath test.  Police arrested the woman on charges of operating while intoxicated and took her to the Northville Township Police Department, where she registered samples of .17 and .18 percent blood alcohol content, which qualifies the woman under Michigan's new "super drunk" laws, which apply harsher penalties for blood alcohol content readings of .17 percent or more.

Police confiscated the woman’s driver’s license.
