Saying goodbye is never easy, at least not for me. And this is no exception. Friday will be my last day with Northville Patch. Working for Patch has been hard work over many hours a week but, above all else, it has been a pleasure serving this community. When Patch first launched in Michigan and I was asked about my preference on which city to cover, Northville was my first choice. It has such a cozy feel to it that I instantly felt welcome. I have never regretted it. I'll be taking a job at The Cleveland Foodbank as its online communications coordinator beginning Nov. 12. Cleveland is my …
Here it is. Halloween season. My favorite time of year. I love it more than Christmas, Thanksgiving and any other notable holiday. Maybe that's weird, but whatever. Those holidays are great, too, don't get me wrong. There's just something about Halloween that I love. It's 50 percent because of my love of candy, and the ability to justify mass consumption of it at this time of year, and the ready availability of horror movies, haunted houses and such. I love that have-to-sleep-with-the-lights-on kind of scared I get because of a good horror movie. Note: I wrote good horror movie. In the …
It was not an easy decision to publish the name and photo of an 18-year-old accused of Criminal Sexual Conduct with an 11-year-old boy. Be assured that anytime such incidents occur, there is always a discussion about how to report on it. But we had a reason, and because of the volume and tone of the comments and emails I've received on the issue, I'm addressing it in this opinion piece. When I received a press release from the city of Northville police department about the case, I knew it was going to be a touchy subject worthy of special sensitivity. That was part of the discussion I had …

We're excited to inaugurate a new series for our Patch readers: "Dispatches: The Changing American Dream." Every day, the national media is full of stories about how American families, businesses and neighbors are adjusting to these trying times. There are so many changes happening so fast that it's dizzying: national debates about unemployment, foreclosures, debt, religion, government and private enterprise all touch on fundamental ways in which we see ourselves and our communities. At Patch, we want to explore that conversation on a daily basis so we can better understand how our neighbors …
You may have noticed that the widgets are here! But what the heck is a widget? This tool, the widget, is a running feed of our latest Northville Patch headlines. The two coolest things about it, in my opinion, are: 1) it's a completely free resource and 2) as soon as a new headline goes up on our website, it will go up in the widget. This is all a part of our effort to keep the community informed around the clock. Your website's content will be enhanced by the convenience of having Northville news that is constantly updated. If you have a website, whether it is a blog or any other kind of web…
Covering tragedy is not my favorite part of this job. In fact, I think you’d be hard pressed to find a journalist to say that it is. In the past week or so, I’ve had my share of sensitive news to cover in the Northville area – from the horrible killing of two Northville students and their mother in a murder-suicide to a fire that nearly destroyed a township family’s home to a, luckily, false alarm gun scare at Northville High School. None of these things is particularly easy to cover, and there is a certain code of ethics that governs most journalists’ conduct when reporting tragedy or grief…
Some conversations, and even debates, are just too good to end. And at Northville Patch there's a new feature – one which we've noticed a lot of you are already using – that allows the online dialogue to keep going. It's available for every single story we publish. At the bottom of every story you will now notice a gray bar with text that reads "Interested in a follow-up to this article?" And below that there is a button that reads, "Yes, keep me posted!" This is helpful if you want to get the latest scoop on what others are saying about a particular issue. You'll get notifications of any …
Just as this is a busy time of year for all of you, it is a busy time for us too at Northville Patch. We'll still be posting new stories everyday during the holidays. And, in the holiday spirit of thanks, I'd like to thank the people that have helped us in covering Northville – froum the sources we've worked with in various departments to the people who have sent us story ideas. Thank you. We're proud of the work we've done. I also thank you, the reader, for checking in with us for your Northville news. But I want to strengthen our content even more in the new year. That's my resolution, so …
The National Weather Service's winter storm warning will expire at 11 p.m. Sunday for areas around Detroit, including Northville. Snow-covered roads and areas of zero visibility are expected to continue until then. Wind gusts will be between 30 and 40 miles per hour and are likely to continue into Monday, according to the NWS. This will cause wind chills to fall below zero Sunday night through Monday night. Snow fell pretty much nonstop throughout Sunday. Snow accumulation is expected to total 4 to 8 inches. But the news goes on. Patch had reporters out and about on Sunday, covering events at…
Northville Patch has only been around for a few days, but I and the team of journalists I work with are working to fill this website up with news and information relevant to you, from news about local businesses, government and schools to profiles on the unique people of Northville. Go ahead take a look. Now, take a deep breath. Exhale. There's a lot of information to take in. But we're hoping it's useful to you. With the upcoming holidays – when your focus will be on family reunions, holiday parties, buying presents and getting your home holiday-ready – there's still a way to keep up on all …
