DESCRIPTION:Many healthcare organizations have Spanish-speaking staff who
  could serve as interpreters &ndash\; with the proper training. Universi
 ty of Michigan Health Services (UMHS) Interpreter Services offers a cour
 se &ndash\; Medical Interpreting for Spanish Speakers &ndash\; to teach 
 your staff the skills they need to interpret competently. This course is
  open to all fully bilingual people who want to communicate with Spanish
 -speakers in healthcare settings.\nThe course provides a 60-hour introdu
 ction to medical interpreting\, focusing on:\n&bull\; Interpreting skill
 s&nbsp\;&bull\; Cultural competency &bull\; Spanish fluency and medical 
 terminology&nbsp\;&bull\; Basic medical knowledge&nbsp\;\nTo enroll in t
 he course\, students must first pass a 20-minute assessment\, conducted

 to patients of all languages\, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week\, throug
 hout the University of Michigan Health System. Our services include: Fac
 e-to-face interpretation in over 40 languages*\; High-quality telephone 
 interpretation in over 140 languages*\; Accurate translations of patient
  education materials and medical records*\; Communication assistance for
  deaf and hard-of-hearing patients\; Language and cultural competency tr
 aining for UMHS employees and others\; and Interpreter skills training f
 or working and aspiring interpreters. We are committed to helping Limite
 d English Proficient (LEP) and deaf patients enjoy equal access to outst
