Northville's Covered Walkway Opens in Time for Spring

The downtown walkway project is about a year late from its expected completion date.

The two-story covered walkway connecting Main Street near Comerica Bank to the Marquis Parking Lot is officially open to pedestrians.  "I personally think it's great. It was so annoying to have [to] walk through stores or all the way around the block to get to Main Street," said reader Jessica Bacon Beamgard on Northville Patch's Facebook page.  Plans for the covered walkway, officially called the Comerica Community Connection, go back to 2006 when it was identified in that year's Downtown Strategic Plan as a way to improve pedestrian access to the heart of downtown Northville. Jennifer Carr-Strong said on Facebook that the walkway is nice but took too long to build. The project was expected to be completed by April 2012. Although it's a …

I wonder if they will put signage up above the doors on the parking lot side letting people know there is a walkway to downtown? It might be hard to identify that, that's what it is to visitors. Looks really attractive, can't wait to see it in person.   more ›

Northville's Annual Seedling Giveaway is Saturday

Each person is allowed six free seedlings.

It's time for the annual Seedling Giveaway in Northville! Anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Northville or Northville Township is welcome to visit Northville Township Hall, 44405 Six Mile Road, between 9 and 11 a.m. Saturday to pick up free seedlings. Barbara O’Brien, founder of the Northville Township Beautification Commission and township resident for 47 years, said her trees that started off as seedlings from this event years ago are now 30 feet tall. "I planted them on the north side of my house near a chimney," she said. "As they got bigger, I moved them out and now they're a wonderful screen for privacy." Up to six seedlings will be handed out to each person on a first come, first served basis. O'Brien said people can …

Path to Maybury in Wayne County's Plan for Northville

Wayne County Commissioner Laura Cox says the county is working with Northville to get a non-motorized connection to Maybury State Park.

Laura Cox, Wayne County Commissioner for District 9, explained the county's current financial situation and upcoming projects at Northville's State of the Community Luncheon on Wednesday. The county is working on getting a non-motorized connection to Maybury State Park on Beck Road. This is a city, township and county endeavour, Cox said at the luncheon at Meadowbrook Country Club. She said $100,000 of Northville's park millage funds will be allocated to this project. Wayne County, the City of Northville and Northville Township worked together before to create the Bennett Arboretum Pathway in 2011 (see YouTube video to the right). That path, along the east side of Sheldon Road between Six and Seven Mile roads, is a non-motorized pedestrian…

Well seeing that there are horse trails in Maybury for people to use I would think a safe way for equestrians to cross 8 mile is needed for those who enter the park on horse back versus trailering in .   more ›

Township Supervisor Says Northville is a Destination

Northville Township Supervisor Robert Nix presented updates on the township at the State of the Community Luncheon Wednesday.

The township has a positive fund balance, Northville Township Supervisor Robert Nix said to applause from his fellow township trustees at the annual State of the Community Luncheon Wednesday. "We're here because of a lot of dedicated work by our predecessors," he said at the luncheon at Meadowbrook Country Club. He said the board members of 2007 cut costs and did everything they could to ensure the township had a future. The community is growing and the township is developing into a place where people want to live, he said. "We're realizing the fruits of that right now," he said. One of the accomplishments of the past year for the township was acquiring $1.1 million in federal grants, he said. The township has a designated grant …

What's the State of the Northville Community?

That's the question speakers tried to answer at the annual State of the Community Luncheon Wednesday.

Northville's city officials and leaders dressed in their business best to address attendees of the State of the Community Luncheon on Wednesday. The luncheon, at Meadowbrook Country Club, is an expected annual event that has been happening for more than 20 years.  "It almost kicks off our spring/summer season," said Jody Humphries, executive director of the Northville Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event. Northville Mayor Christopher Johnson and Township Supervisor Bob Nix presented updates on the city and township. Nix started by mentioning the tragedies that seem to happen all too often.  "We should have in our thoughts and prayers, the men and women in the armed forces and the first responders who help protect us day to day," …

To be able to safely reach Maybury state park on a non-motorized route (both Bike/Walk friendly) would be a HUGE WIN for the park and Northville. Connection needs to include a Downtown route...   more ›

City Mayor Says Downtown Northville Thrives

Northville Mayor Christopher Johnson presented updates on the city at the State of the Community Luncheon Wednesday.

City of Northville Mayor Christopher Johnson said he is proud to be working on developing the downtown. He shared updates on the city's recent efforts at the annual State of the Community Luncheon Wednesday at Meadowbrook Country Club. "One of the real highlights of downtown is our outdoor dining," he said. "If we look outside the window, it's coming." Johnson said one of downtown's recent improvements to be proud of is The Garage Grill & Fuel Bar, which is at the former site of an abandoned gas station. He said the city worked with the restaurant's owners to do an environmental clean-up of the building, which had more hazardous materials from when it was a dry cleaner than when it was a gas station. Downtown Northville has also become a …

Sorry Mayor, small battle wins (like Garage) may be moral victories, but in the long run you're still losing the war against competing communities and developments. Having events that equate to nothing but little hob nob parties and come with minimal long-term benefit for downtown and its business owners will do nothing for the future of your city. Time to wake up and go to war to fight for your …   more ›
