NHS Choirs Hit the Road to Celebrate Success

Northville High School’s choir program continues to show that, as Michigan’s largest high school choral program, it remains one of its best.  Chamber Choir (20-voice mixed ensemble) and, in a separate event, junior Samantha Kargilis performed at the 52nd annual Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF), held May 8-10, 2014 in Kalamazoo.

MYAF develops, recognizes and advocates excellence in arts education.  The three-day festival is the culmination of a nine-month search for the finest artistic talent (dance, theatre, visual arts, film, creative writing, music composition, instrumental and vocal music) in Michigan high schools.  A festival invitation is a coveted, prestigious and very rare honor in the arts education community.

On May 9, Chamber Choir performed at Western Michigan University.  NHS choir director Mark A. Krempski directed Halle Bins, Mathew Buie, Heather Donnelly, Ryan Duda, Peter Fontana, Riley Gaidica, Juliana Gumina, Annelie Herrmann, Faith Horbatch, Jack Kallas, Samantha Kargilis, Nathan Lane, Marissa Lozser, Spencer Maize, Jennifer Meyer, Jonathan Oh, Peter Sabak, Andrew Schafer, Dominic Seipenko and Laney Sullivan.  Additionally, Kargilis was named a Michigan Youth Arts Distinguished Scholar and selected as a member of the 120-voice All-State Choir, which performed at WMU on May 10.

Memorial Weekend’s annual NHS choir tour marked another unforgettable milestone.   104 students joined choir directors and parent chaperones for three busy days in New York City.  Students sang at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and in The Church of St. Paul the Apostle.   Enthusiastic applause from appreciative crowds followed each performance.   The group saw two Broadway musicals, visited many landmarks and sampled different ethnic foods.   Their games in Central Park, including the annual water balloon toss, captivated onlookers who cheered and laughed right along with the students.  Unstructured time for additional exploration and beautiful weather were welcomed bonuses to this high-spirited, whirlwind event.
