Stallions Flag Football Team takes the charge out of the Chargers, 44-26
Stallions Flag Football began August 24 against the Commerce Chargers. Anticipation had built up wondering if the team who struggled at the beginning of last season, would continue the momentum they played with at the end of 2012. The first quarter ended with a Chargers 7-0 lead. The second quarter brought a 15 yard touchdown run by Isaac Pace, seeming to unharness fellow Stallions. The half ended with a tackle at the 2 yard line by Luke Parrinello and sustained by an interception from Drew Rankin, securing a 19 to 7 Stallion lead. Kickoff returns proved crucial in the second half, starting with a 74 yard run by Pace in the fifth quarter. Evan Deak followed, running and cutting a hard left at the 23 yard line and dropping three Charger defensemen for a total of 65 yards before he hit The Zone. Tackles by Couture, Kamposh and Prior helped maintain the Stallions modest lead throughout the game, but Commerce was starting to make headway, scoring 25 points in the fifth quarter. Entering into the 6th quarter Robbie Schuckel and Cooper Hoffman housed the outside of the Stallions defense, keeping the Chargers inside where the line, including Devin Shaffer, made it grueling to let Chargers by. A drive, starting at the 25 yard line was stopped and the ball turned over, securing the Stallions 44 to 26 stampede and taking the charge from the Chargers. The new squad totaled over 400 yards with contributions from Shukeireh, Cappaert, Rickard, Khatiwala, Jones and Stathas, over two dozen tackles and seven touchdowns with names like Ross, Minghine and Jeremias echoing time and again throughout the game. It should certainly be exciting to see if the Stallions Flag crew can keep this momentum as they take on the Blue Jays 9am September 8 at Bentley Field.
