8 Mile Road Repairs to Cost $4.7 Million

Eight Mile Road will be resurfaced between Napier and Taft roads.

Eight Mile Road has seen better days. Now, thanks to a road resurfacing project, it has the hope of seeing brighter ones.

The project will start in July and includes a whole stretch of Eight Mile Road between Napier and Taft roads, in the City of Northville and on the border of Novi and Northville Township. The road will remain open to traffic during the entire project, but some areas may be reduced to one lane with traffic directed by flaggers.

The project will cost about $4.7 million, of which $2.8 million is federally funded. The remaining $1.9 million will be shared by the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), Northville Township, the City of Northville, the City of Novi and Oakland County general government through the Tri-Party Program.

The RCOC is having a public information meeting Tuesday about the upcoming resurfacing project for Eight Mile Road.

The "open house" public meeting is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Moraine Elementary School, 46811 West Eight Mile Road in Northville. There will not be a formal presentation; anyone interested can stop by at any time to review the plans or discuss the project with road commission staff.

Project Details:

  • The section of the project between Garfield and Taft roads is expected to start in July and be completed in November.
  • The section between Napier and Garfield is expected to be completed in 2014, though there is the possibility that the contractor could complete it this year.
The project involves resurfacing these sections of Eight Mile Road with three inches of asphalt. The lanes will also be widened to accommodate bicycles, and there will be better drainage and sidewalks between Beck and Taft roads.

The road will also have improved traffic lights.
  • The traffic signals at the Eight Mile-Beck Road and Eight Mile-Taft Road intersections will be updated.
  • The flashing light at the Eight Mile-Napier Road intersection will also be updated.
  • The pedestrian crosswalks along these sections of Eight Mile Road will be upgraded to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
A construction contract will go to the lowest qualified bidder by Friday.
