Eye Catching Signs Meant to Slow Drivers in Northville

These speed limit signs carry a special message.

Have you seen these unusual speed limit signs in Northville?

They read: "Keep Kids Alive Drive 25." The signs are on Rogers Street, southbound and northbound, between Seven Mile Road and Main Street.

The story behind these signs proved to be a mystery. City Hall employees weren't sure where they came from, and Northville city police had not heard of them. After a little digging, it turned out Public Works Director Jim Gallogly was the man behind the signs.

"I put them in following the street construction project last fall," he said.

Gallogly said a resident, who saw the signs in another city, requested they be installed on Rogers Street near her home. He said he called Dornbos Sign company of Charlotte, Mich., and they knew exactly which sign he was talking about.

A Dornbos Sign employee said they don't make these particular speed limit signs often. It's not standard so they aren't listed on the website either. However, Gallogly said they cost the same as a traditional sign.

"They're just a little different from a standard speed limit sign," he said.

The lowest speed limit that the city can post on its streets is 25 mph, he said, unless the area is near a school playground or park.

"We thought maybe this would slow people down. That was the goal," he said.
