Residents Prepare For 'Mile Long Garage Sale'

Local resident Marjorie Banner has organized the Mile Long Garage Sale, including seven subdivisions and a potential 1,500 homes.

A group of Northville residents are preparing to redefine the typical 'Spring Cleaning' experience this month.

On May 13 and May 14, seven subdivisions along Six Mile Road will be participating in a Mile Long Garage Sale. Official sale hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Organizer and township trustee Marjorie Banner said that as many as 1,500 homes and garages may be participating. The united sale will be roughly a mile long and a mile wide.

Banner, a resident of the Lakes of Northville subdivision, coordinated the effort. She said that while she has been a part of other organized neighborhood garage sales, this is the first time so many subdivisions have gotten involved.

"It started out as a question for our neighboring subs. We have organized among a few of us in previous years," said Banner. "I just asked all of us this time and almost everyone said yes."

The neighborhoods involved are those off of Six Mile Road, west of Haggerty. Subdivisions include Northville Colony Estates I-V, Northville Commons, Northville Trails, Brookstone, Maple Hill, Lakes of Northville, and Whisperwood.

If this year's sale proves successful, the event could turn into an annual one. Block parties, barbecues and specials could be planned in later years. But, before it gets even bigger, Banner said she and her neighbors are focusing on the task at hand.

She added, "I think this is our 'baby step' forward. We'll see how this one goes."
