The Northville High School boys basketball team traveled to Milford High School Friday February 22 to face the Milford Mavericks in the third round consolation bracket of the KLAA Tournament, and they came away with a 52-27 victory. The Mavericks scored right off the opening tip, but Northville went on an 8-2 run to lead 8-4 after the first 8 minutes. Northville could have had a much larger lead at the end of the quarter but they shot only 3-13 from the field. Milford hit a free throw to start the scoring in the second quarter, but the Mustangs then went on an 11-1 run before the undermanned Mavericks scored their first field goal of the quarter. Northville shot 5-11 in the second quarter to take a 21-10 halftime lead. Andrew Meacham had 10 points in the half and Stewart Henzi pitched in 6 points. Although Joe Hewlett did not score in the first half, he had 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and he hit the floor for loose balls several times.
The same pattern of scoring started the second half as Milford drew first blood yet again before Northville scored 12 of the next 17 points for a 33-17 lead. The Mavericks scored the last 4 points of the third quarter to cut the Northville lead to 33-21. The Mustangs dominated the final period, shooting 5-11 from the field including 3 three-pointers, and outscored Milford 19-6. Meacham led the Mustangs scoring with 26 points, including 4-4 three-pointers in the second half. Malik Bazzi chipped in with 10 points, and Hewlett ended up with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Northville’s final game in the KLAA Tournament is Tuesday February 26 at Brighton.
