Bites Nearby: Northville's Poole's Tavern

This cozy pub tucked in Northville's downtown district is great for a casual evening out.

Overview: is a cozy pub tucked into the strip along the north side of East Main Street. Its menu is expansive yet simple. Burgers and sandwiches are among its signature favorites, and the menu features daily specials.

Décor: From the mirrored beer signs to the brass bar top, Poole’s gives visitors a genuine pub experience. A long bar rail divides the bar in half, from the front door to the rear. To the left is a bar that runs the length of the room, with two high-tops near the front window. To the right of the door are numerous tables between seven booths.

Drinks: Happy hour includes $.75 off all alcoholic drinks and $1 off all appetizers, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Monday through Friday) and from midnight until closing (Monday through Thursday). On Mondays through Wednesdays, from 10 pm to closing, specials include $2 domestic bottles, $3 well drinks and $3.50 Stolichnaya Razberry or Captain Morgan drinks.

Appetizers: Offerings range from the simple (chips and salsa, $3.95) to the hearty (Northville’s Trifecta Basket: Mini beef tacos, chicken fingers, and cheese stix, $7.75). In between are a variety of favorites (hot wings, $7.95; quesadillas, $5.95, with chicken, $7.95; rib teaser, with french fries, $7.95; and nachos, starting at $6.95 – add chicken or beef for $2, or a side of guacamole for $2.50).

On Red Wings game nights wings are $.50 each.

Entrees: Lunch includes a cup of soup (soup of the day) and a half sandwich for $6.95, a cup of chili and a half sandwich for $7.50 or a clam chowder and a half sandwich for $7.95. Dinner highlights include a variety of burgers and sandwiches (ranging from $5.95 to $8.95), ribs ($14.25), fish and chips ($8.95), blackened yellow-fin tuna ($11.25) and steak bites ($10.25; add hummus, $14.25).

Soups and Salads: Poole’s menu features numerous entrée salads, including the grilled chicken caeser salad ($8.95; substitute salmon, $9.95), Michigan walnut cherry chicken salad ($9.95) and the southwestern chicken salad ($8.95). The soup of the day is $3.25 for a cup and $3.95 per bowl.

Service:  Friendly and accommodating. The staff has the basics down pat: Drinks, menu and attention to detail.
