Northville Township's Cantoro Italian Market to Open in July

Market owner says completing the parking lot is one of the last projects before opening.

Nearly two years after original plans to open a location in Northville Township, Cantoro Italian Market will open its doors this summer on Haggerty Road just north of Five Mile.

Parking development plans delayed the project. The property owners proposed to the Northville Township Planning Commission last year a zoning change to add parking. But the commission unanimously voted to withhold sending the proposal to the Board of Trustees until a new site plan proposal was submitted and reviewed.

"We finally got approved from the city for the planning for that. Within the next two weeks, we’ll start moving the dirt," said John Fallone, co-owner of Cantoro Italian Market.

The interior of the market is 90 percent complete, he said. One of the remaining projects was an additional elevator.

"We needed to put another elevator inside to service all three floors," he said.

One of the final steps is expanding the parking lot, then Cantoro Italian Market will open in July, Fallone said.

Cantoro's is one of Metro Detroit's most popular bakeries, featuring fresh Italian breads each morning. The store also has a deli and stocks popular wines, Italian pasta, vegetables and a large selection of olive oils, including the Fallone family brand.

The Northville location will have a few new offerings, Fallone said, including a wine made from grapes right at the store, a bigger variety of homemade pasta, gifts imported from Italy, cakes and pastries (including wedding cakes) and a sit-down café.
