Free Doughnuts in Celebration of National Donut Day

Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme are offering free doughnuts for National Donut Day.

It's National Donut Day!

Krispy Kreme is said to be giving away free doughnuts without any other purchase and Dunkin' Donuts franchises are commemorating the ocassion by giving a free doughnut to anyone who purchases a beverage today.

The Huffington Post reports that "Both chains have taken to Facebook to promote the event, Krispy Kreme listing it on their main page, while Dunkin' Donuts has created an entire event page for the day."

The day, as the Huffington Post reports, has historic roots going back to 1938.

"The Salvation Army declared the first Friday of every June to be National Donut Day, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. It was originally intended to help the needy during the Great Depression."
