Hillside Middle School Student to Open Downtown Northville Shop for the Holidays

New businesses come and go in downtown Northville.

What's special about Samsational Jewelry – which is opening Oct. 12 next door to Starring the Gallery on Main Street – is that it will feature the designs of 13-year-old Sammi Yungman. It will be open until sometime in December. An exact date remains undetermined. Yungman creates necklaces, earrings, bracelets and belts. She may soon offer watch designs, too.

"I just love doing it," the Hillside Middle School student said. "I like just putting myself into pieces. It's fun to watch people buy it and wear it. It makes me feel really happy and proud."

The store will be located at 122 W. Main St. and will share half the space with Starring the Gallery, where some of her designs have been on sale. The gallery will use the space mostly for holiday items.

"She's a very good seller in my store," said Starring the Gallery owner Mary Starring. "People love her stuff. It'll be good for her and for me."

Starring added that she hopes the addition of the new store in the otherwise vacant storefront will draw more people downtown and to her store. Teaming up with Samsational Jewelry is a new kind of partnership for the gallery, which will soon be celebrating its seventh year in Northville.

Sammi and her mom, Lori, will work at the store. Sammi has experience as a designer and salesperson, selling her jewelry online. It's preparing Sammi for her dream job -- to own her own jewelry stores.

The entrepreneurial experience has taught her to learn how to juggle her priorities, including school, which is something her mother is proud of.

"I'm hoping she learns what it is to have her own store," Lori Yungman said. "She's gonna do a lot of work."

As of Oct. 12, store hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.

On Oct. 26, Starring the Gallery will hold a celebration for Samsational Jewelry's first anniversary. The gathering will be held from 6-9 p.m. For more information, email info@samsationaljewelry.com.
