Local Vendors Kick Off Northville Farmers' Market

There are eight ingredients in Diane Allan's pasta, sold at the on Thursday.

For the market's opening day, Allan brought pasta, ravioli, sauces and other items to sell that were made recently and without preservatives, she said. Allan didn't have to travel far to promote her business either. She's from Northville.

"People should buy locally made products," the Northville resident said. "It's fresher. It hasn't been sitting on a shelf or truck for a month."

The Northville Farmers' Market had dozens of vendors selling crafts, produce, meals, flowers, plants and more. For some local vendors, like Northville resident Kristi Zebrowski who was selling gluten-free baking mixes, it was their first time at a farmers market.

"I'm right down the street," she said of her home-based business.

Zebrowski has been developing gluten-free mixes to sell for more than a year. As a cook, she employed her skills to make pancake, cookie, cornbread and other mixes. At the close of her first day at the market, she has been pleased with her business' reception in the community.

"So far it seems everyone is really friendly and eager to shop around," she said.

Susan Weber is also a first-time vendor, who sold her raspberry and caramel sauces at the market. She is a realtor and caterer of 30 years.

As the real estate market dipped, Weber said she turned her attention to selling a product her catering customers always loved.

"People asked about the caramel sauce all the time. "I just thought 'it's time'" she said. "I'm just excited to be in Northville. I'm from Northville."

The farmers' market is sponsored by the . Chamber director Jody Humphries said that in addition to the weekly event being a good way to show support for local businesses, it is also a popular occassion for socializing.

"It's such a great gathering place," she said. "You'll inevitably see friends and neighbors. That's what makes it special."

The Northville Farmers' Market is held in the lot across from Northville Downs on Seven Mile and Sheldon roads. It takes place every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
