Community, Health and a Better World

Ten years ago, I was not who I am today. I was overweight/obese, insecure, irritable and bleak about my future....

Wow! I am incredibly honored to be share my message with the Patch community. I, like Patch, have a vision for our community. I strive to inform, connect and spread positive news. My message is simple. I believe that when you and your family focus on greater health, life becomes easier, life becomes more more fun and life becomes more purposeful. I refuse to believe that sickness, disease and anything less than optimal well-being is "just the way it is." I know this because I have personally, experienced both ends of the spectrum and wish to share with you exactly that.

Ten years ago, I was not who I am today. I was overweight/obese, insecure, irritable and bleak about my future. I did well in school, popular and was a good football player, but that was about it. I made a decision that changed my life and the lives of others forever. I didn't want to be like my grandfathers who I never knew because of their poor health choices. I decided to get healthy. Not with pills, potions or other quick fixes but, true healing; health from inside out. I started an exercise regimen and stuck to my plan. I began to nourish my body with foods nature intended for us. I started hanging out with other kids who thought the way I wanted to think. In twelve short weeks. I was a brand new person. My entire outlook on life improved. I found myself in college personal training and sharing my message of greater health with anyone who would listen.

Three years later, I noticed my body breaking down. I developed irritability with the same foods that used to nourish me. I developed headaches and moodiness towards the people I loved. Slowly, my energy and vitality dwindled. I thought I knew it all...what was I not doing? "This can't go on," I thought. How was I supposed to share the message of greater health, if I wasn't healthy? Headaches, irritability, aches and stress are not normal. I knew they weren't because I experienced nothing less than feeling amazing everyday for a period of years. My dad, so lovingly, sent me to a family chiropractor. My life was forever changed.

Here we are. Does this story resonate with you? Are you looking to improve your health a little bit or dramatically? Have been thinking about restoring health in your family, but your don't know how or you're just lacking the support and motivation? This blog is about you. This blog is to help you experience your best life. I only ask you to keep an open mind about the concepts that I share. What I realized is that my past beliefs and behaviors weren't serving me what I wanted. I had to adapt new beliefs and new behaviors. This was hard but thankfully, I kept an open mind and listened to those willing to help me.

I look forward to your input, your questions and your stories of greater health. Together, I do believe that we can make a difference in our life and the lives of others. Northville is already an amazing community. Lets make it better. Lets be a model for the rest of the world to live by.

What do you think is an important "first step" for people looking to improve their health and well being?
Dr. Ryan Cooper May 23, 2011 at 08:29 pm
Great question Lisa. Personally, my first step was to make a decision and stick to it. The decision can be big or small and is very personal to every person. It can be to loose 5 lbs. It can be to loose 100 lbs. It can be something as simple as adding 10 mins of walking everyday or getting adjusted on a regular basis. Confidence is key. When you make a decision, stick to it and reap the benefits, it builds confidence. Also, I recommend defining what you want to accomplish. Establish a vision for your life and get excited about it. Where do you see yourself in five or ten years? Seek support from others who believe in you! Which you are already doing! Hope this helps Lisa!
