Where Does Health Come From? Finding a Treasure is Much Easier With a Map!

Many people want to be healthy and well, but when I ask them what health is and where it comes from they often seem puzzled and not really sure. In order before for us to be healthy, it makes sense for us first to define it and then determine how to achieve it.

Dorlands Medical Dictionary defines health as: a state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. Wow! That is a lot different than what most of us have been told. Health isn't just a lack of symptoms or feeling 'good.' Health is about you being your best physically, mentally, socially and perhaps spiritually!

Many times, most of us gauge our health on whether we feel good or feel bad. This is dangerous. Often times, the very first symptom of heart disease is a heart attack and/or death. Never judge your health by the presence or absence of symptoms. Many of my patients do not realize that they have spinal decay present in their spine for the past 20-40 years. And we wonder why so many illnesses are so hard to cure...they have been there for an incredible length of time and we never knew it!

Webster's dictionary defines health as: a condition of wholeness in which we have 100 percent of our organs functioning 100 percent of the time. I look at this as a health formula. Wholeness + Function + Time = Health. Unfortunately, most people are missing their organs and there is nothing we can do about the time that has passed before we knew what true health was. So, the key to health is FUNCTION. If we have 90 percent of our organs functioning, we want to be sure that they are functioning as best they can, that way we can be as healthy as possible. If we have 100 percent of our organs, let's be sure that they function as best as they can, so they don't go bad and we can reach our optimal levels of health and well being!

How do we get our bodies to function better? Gray's Anatomy (not the cheesy TV show) states that the purpose of the brain and nerve system is to control and coordinate function (the key to health) of all the tissues, organs and systems in the body and to adapt the body to the environment. Inspiring, right? Your brain and nerve system is your master system controlling the health and function of your body. Your brain and nerve system, when neglected, will lead to dysfunction, disease and potentially death.

Maintaining the health of your brain and nerve system from birth is an optimal step in your health and well-being. Regular chiropractic care is essential for proper function. Physical and mental exercise are essential. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids play an important role too. These habits must occur daily, much like building a healthy relationship or a successful business.

If you improve the function of your brain and nerve system, health  and healing are the natural result. Your body doesn't become ill because of a lack of medications or too many body parts.
