Getting Halloween-Ready in Northville (VIDEO)

A lot of effort goes into building the elaborate Halloween displays in the city of Northville. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the set-up.

Marlene Danol's attic will be getting a lot less cluttered soon.

The colorful characters and thematic cutouts that were displayed for two hours a year, over the past 25 years, on her lawn on Halloween night will be getting a new home. Danol is calling it quits on her elaborate yard displays and is donating the items to Northville Parks and Recreation. She'll even be parting with her favorite displays from the year she and her family decorated with a Jungle Book motif.

"Every year we picked up different ideas," Danol said. "Every year has been just delightful."

Since her husband died and because it is getting to be a lot of work, the family has decided to keep Halloween more low key. They'll still distribute candy, they just won't have the same kind of lawn display trick-or-treaters have seen over the past 25 years.

Her daughter Sue Tucker has been part of the Halloween festivities at the home and said it will be bittersweet to give up the family's decorating tradition.

"It was a lot of fun and there's a couple of generations of kids that have actually grown up coming to our house," she said. "It's just memory-making. It's creative. It's a little contribution to our community and that's made it all worthwhile."

Around the corner from the Danol house, the Presley residence was getting a Halloween makeover - possibly for the last time ever too.

Owner Greg Presley said that since he is selling the house, he hopes the new owners pick up the tradition where he left off. Each year, the Presleys hold a live performance at the house. His favorite year, the Northviller-themed year, was a local tribute to Michael Jackson following his death with choreographed dancing to the Thriller song.

"This has been absolutely the best thing to do. It has been fun to see all the smiles," he said. "It's a service. It's a piece of work for sure but it's absolutely worth it."
