Step out of the frantic holiday pace and into a true celebration of the season.  Savor a Northville tradition when the school’s ten choirs partner with its three symphonic bands for three evenings of memorable holiday music in the NHS auditorium.

While some groups (including TrebleMakers and BackBeat) will perform all three nights, others will only be on stage  one night.  Voices and instruments will expertly blend to present seasonal music of many styles.  “At all three performances, the Chorale will enter the darkened auditorium in a candlelight procession,” states Mary Kay Pryce, an NHS choir director.  “We will surround the audience with singing.”  Mike Rumbell, an NHS band director, reminds that “in keeping with tradition, Symphonic Band 9 and Symphonic Band 10 will open Tuesday and Wednesday’s shows with ‘Christmas Spectacular.’ ”

Concerts will close with another cherished tradition when current choir students share the stage with the FATS Choir to sing a carol medley and the “Hallelujah Chorus”.  Pryce explains that “the FATS (Friends, Family, Alumni, Teachers and Students) Choir started in the mid-1980s when there were so few singers in the choir; we were looking to add to the number of singers already on stage.  Over the years, we kept adding and adding.  We no longer need to add singers, but the FATS Choir tradition continues.”  Music Boosters’ President Juliet Ickes adds that “it’s a very happy reunion for many students and their choir teachers.”

The Music Boosters invite Thursday night’s audience to gather for light snacks and desserts at the annual afterglow in the cafeteria.  Attendees are encouraged to donate to Northville Civic Concern at the afterglow.  For alumni, Thursday evening will end with the annual party at Pryce’s home.

Music Boosters continue to sell raffle tickets, as they have since September.  This ambitious fundraiser will conclude when ten winning tickets will be drawn at the afterglow.  If all 1500 tickets are sold, prizes will range from $100 to $5000.  If fewer tickets are sold, prize amounts must be modified, as specified in the terms of the raffle run by the 501(c) 3 Boosters’ non-profit organization.

In the 1980s, NHS holiday concerts spanned two evenings.  Rumbell recalls that “the strength and popularity of our highly sophisticated music programs made it clear that we needed a third night.  We’re always growing and improving.  Currently, we have an immediate need for band tuxedos.  We’re so close to having enough money.  We’re counting on the Boosters’ successful fundraiser to put us over the top.  We want our professional-level musicians to look as great as they sound.”

Concerts are Tuesday December 18, Wednesday December 19 and Thursday December 20.  All shows begin at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $7, and can be purchased at the NHS box office 2:15-3 p.m. Monday through Friday and prior to performances.  Reservations are highly recommended and can be made by e-mail to prycema@northville.k12.mi.us or
by phone to 248 344-8420 x50711.
