Northville Kayakers Win Kensington Metropark Race

Nicholas McCubbin and Rachel McCubbin, both from Northville, places first in their respective categories at Kensington Metropark's third annual canoe and kayak Race.

Nicholas McCubbin took first in the men's four-mile recreation class race with a time of 49 minutes, 24 seconds. Rachel McCubbin took first place in the women's four-mile recreation class race with a time of 58 minutes, 13 seconds.

The event, sponsored by the Huron-Clinton Metroparks, REI, Riverside Kayak Connection and Heavner Canoe Rental, took place Aug. 4.

A total of 46 paddlers in 44 boats competed. The race was open to all skill levels, canoes, and single and double kayaks, according to a press release from Kensington Metropark.

Races were divided into the following categories:

  • Recreational, for boats shorter than 14’.
  • Sport, for boats 14’ to 17’.
  • Competition, for boats 17’ to 18.5’ built specifically for racing.
  • Surf-ski.
First, second and third-place winners received medals.  Everyone was entered to win $50 gift certificates from REI and Riverside Kayak Connection.
