Should Auto Safety Equipment Be Mandated?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is considering whether or not to require automakers to install automatic braking and smart car technology in vehicles.  Automatic braking brakes the vehicle if it senses that a crash might occur. It will brake the vehicle even if the driver is not trying to stop the vehicle. The smart car technology allows vehicles on the road to communicate with each other to help avoid collisions.

Automakers point out that these collision avoidance systems can be expensive. On the other hand, these technologies have the capability of potentially saving many lives. Most automakers would prefer to be able to introduce the systems on vehicles as they choose and to also offer them as options. This would help maintain the affordability of cars.

Do you think that these collision avoidance systems should be mandated or that automakers should be able to decide whether and how to introduce them?
