Crime Report: Bomb Scare Reported at Northville Post Office

Matchboxes cause bomb scare at post office

Postal workers at the Northville U.S. Post Office noticed a strange sulfuric smell coming from a package on Jan. 21, according to Northville city police reports.

Local police and the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad were called in.

According to the report, the package belonged to a former city fire fighter. He was called and told police he had ordered a matchbox collection from an online website. When the bomb squad opened the box, they discovered the matchboxes. One had gotten loose, somehow was ignited and "started a fire within the box that burned shortly before going out."

Tobacco reported stolen

A man was seen stealing tobacco from the Marathon gas station on South Main Street, according to city police reports. The man was seen by a witness and on video stealing the tobacco on Jan. 21, according to reports.

Day care school bus vandalized

The bus at The Learning Center on Ridge Road was vandalized sometime from the evening on Jan. 19 to the following morning, according to township police reports. The windshield and passenger rearview mirror were reported shattered.

Seven Mile property trespassers arrested on warrants

Four men were cited for trespassing on the Seven Mile property, the former psychiatric hospital, on Jan. 22. Three of the men also had outstanding warrants out of Westland for their arrest.

An officer on patrol spotted the men loading metal into the bed of a pick up truck, according to township police reports. The men already had metal scrap, including steel, in the truck.

The three men with warrants were arrested and turned over to Westland police, according to the report. The other man was cited for trespassing and released.

They are all due to appear in the 35th District Court in February.

Car keyed, owner reports

A man shopping at on Jan. 22 reported to township police that his car had been keyed while he was inside. He told police that there were two long scratches on the passenger side, according to the police report.

Wallet reported stolen from car

A man reported that his wallet had been stolen from his unlocked car on Jan. 22, according to township police reports. The wallet contained credit and debit cards as well as a Michigan identification card.
