Crime Report: Man Blames Mom for Drug Possession, Trespassers Arrested at Seven Mile Property

Here's a summary of crime reports around the area from Feb. 15 to Wednesday.

Passport, laptop stolen

A man on the 40000 block of Tournament Drive reported to police that someone had stolen his briefcase, which contained his passport, and his laptop computer from his sport utility vehicle.

The man told police that sometime between the evening of Feb. 15 and the following morning, someone had taken the items from his SUV. He was not sure whether it was locked. There was no visible damage, according to police reports.

Soon after, the man's briefcase and passport were found by a boy nearby, according to reports. The laptop is still missing.

Theft from car reported

A man on the 17000 block of Devonshire Court reported that a family friend's car, parked in his driveway, was broken into sometime around Feb. 15.

There was broken glass around the driver's side door, which was locked, according to township police reports.

On Feb. 16, a purse belonging to the owner of the car was found with all of its contents intact, according to the reports.

Man arrested on warrant and accused of deceiving officer

Around 8 p.m. Feb. 15, a man at the of Northville apartments was found outside by police talking with a woman inside through a broken window, which he allegedly broke earlier that day, according to police.

The woman is the man's ex-wife and had a personal protection order against the man, the reports indicated.

According to reports: Police patted him down and asked for his name, which they already knew. He began to give a fake name, but the officer stopped the man and told him that he knew his real name. He asked the man to repeat the spelling of his real name.

The man allegedly proceeded to spell a fake name.

According to police reports, the man had an outstanding warrant from the Northville Township Police Department. He was arrested on the warrant and for obstructing justice for allegedly providing the wrong name to police twice.

He did not post bond on either charge.

Man reportedly tries to blame drug possession on mom

Township police spotted a suspicious vehicle at 3:22 a.m. Feb. 16 on Six Mile. According to reports: An officer tried to follow the vehicle but could not spot it after it made a turn near . He searched the area and parked to wait and see whether the car would reappear.

"Within 15 to 20 seconds," the officer noticed the car back on the road, according to the police report.

The car was pulled over, and officers asked for insurance and registration information. According to the report, the 19-year-old driver said he did not know where the information was because it was his mom's car. The officer reportedly suggested he look in the glove compartment, but the driver said he didn't have a key. The officer told him that the key to the car would open the glove box.

According to the report: The officer noticed the man was shaky and acting nervously. He also said the driver had watery, glazed eyes. The officer said he recognized the passenger from previous incidents.

Police asked the driver for permission to search the car. The driver declined three times, and police asked whether he had been smoking marijuana. The driver at first said he didn't but then reportedly admitted he had been smoking marijuana earlier that day but not recently. He also said he was just getting off of probation and didn't want to be blamed for anything his mom had in the car. He said that anything found in the car belonged to his mother and her boyfriend, not him, the report said.

The officer searched the car and found a pipe, a silver grinder and rolling papers. In the glove box, a cigarette box with two small bags of marijuana were reportedly found.

The driver said his friend, whom he said had a medical marijuana use card, could have put the marijuana in the car earlier that day.

The driver was arrested for possession of marijuana and possession of "narcotic equipment," according to the police report. He declined to call his mother to post his $600 bail.

Man arrested on charges of theft

A 20-year-old Livonia man was arrested Feb. 18, accused of trying to break into cars outside of on Haggerty Road before going into the store and allegedly stealing 10 packs of batteries.

According to reports, a Meijer employee spotted the man pulling on car door handles in the parking lot around 3:30 a.m. The employee called police, but in the meantime the man had gone inside the store.

When he came out, the officer stopped him and asked him about allegedly attempting to break into cars in the parking lot. The officer also asked the man if he had any weapons on him. The man said he didn't but that he had batteries on him, according to the report.

The officer asked if they were just stolen from Meijer, and the man admitted that they were, according to the report. The officer also asked what drugs he was on. The man initially said none but then allegedly confessed to having just used marijuana and being addicted to heroin and Xanax, the report said.

Police arrested the man on charges of retail fraud and attempted larceny from a vehicle. They recovered the 10 packs of batteries, valued at $216, that the man had stashed in his pants, according to the report.

Seven Mile property trespassers arrested

Township police spotted a vehicle in the parking lot across from the former psychiatric hospital on Seven Mile last week. The reporting officer allegedly looked around the pickup truck and found that it was still warm and there were purses inside.

According to the report, trespassers often leave their cars in the lot while they are on the property. The officer reportedly waited for the driver and passengers to come back, but after they had been gone awhile, he called for backup and proceeded to go to the Seven Mile property while one officer waited by the truck.

Using night vision, the officer spotted a group of people, ranging in ages from 20 to 23, watching the truck from the property.

The officer shouted, "Stop! Police!" and ordered them to get on their knees and they did, according to the report. He patted them down for weapons, found none and issued them a trespassing citation.

One of the women reportedly had old patient-transfer slips from the hospital in her pocket, and one of the young men had an old issue of People magazine in his pocket. They were confiscated, and police let them leave with their citations.

Speeder caught with marijuana hidden in soft drink

Police noticed a speeding car around 3 a.m. Feb. 19 on Seven Mile near the Apartments.

When the officer pulled the car over, he noticed a burning marijuana smell and asked the driver whether he had been smoking marijuana. The 21-year-old driver from Westland at first said he had not, according to the report, and then admitted to smoking some earlier that day.

Police searched the vehicle and found a small bag of marijuana floating among ice cubes in a cup of soda.

When questioned by the officer, the driver and passenger each denied owning the bag, according to the report. Eventually, the passenger, a 21-year-old from Southfield, admitted it was his, the report said.

He was charged with possession of marijuana, and the driver was released with a speeding ticket. The passenger later posted $300 bond and was given a March court date.

Alleged Kohl's shoplifter caught

A 52-year-old Novi woman was arrested Sunday for allegedly attempting to steal from Kohl’s.

Store security noticed the woman around 5 p.m. taking jewelry and clothing, among other things, from a display and then trying to conceal it in her shopping cart and “on her person,” according to the police report.

She allegedly left the store without paying for $329 in merchandise, was stopped by store security and eventually was arrested by township police.

Three vehicle break-ins reported in same area

A man on the 20000 block of Woodbend Drive reported to township police that sometime during the overnight hours of Feb. 16, someone had stolen his GPS unit. It was attached to his windshield, according to police reports.

The man said it was possible that the vehicle, parked in the driveway, could have been unlocked. He told police that his dog was barking around 1 a.m. and that it was possible the alleged thief broke in then. There was no visible damage to the car.

Sometime between the evening of Feb. 16 and the afternoon of Feb. 18, a township resident reported that someone has stolen a GPS device and gym bag from a car parked in the resident's driveway.

There was no sign of forced entry, and the owner said it is possible that the vehicle may have been unlocked, according to police reports.

Sometime between 3:30 p.m. Feb. 16 and the following morning, someone allegedly broke into a nearby SUV and stole a GPS unit, iPhone and other items. There was no damage to the vehicle, and it was possibly left unlocked, the owner told police.
