UPDATED: 2 Men Die in Head-On Collision Near Eight Mile and Napier

Eight Mile between Beck and Napier were closed for several hours Wednesday while investigators surveyed the scene.

Update at 10:50 p.m.: Eight Mile Road is now open, according to a Novi Public Safety alert.

Two men are dead following a head-on collision shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday on Eight Mile Road near Napier Road on the Northville-Novi-South Lyon border.

A man from Livonia driving a blue Mercury on Eight Mile was hit, according to witness reports, by a truck that was driving westbound but veered into the eastbound lane, Northville Public Safety Director John Werth said.

The Livonia driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The South Lyon driver of an F-150 Truck was taken to Botsford Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Ages of the two men were not immediately available.

Neither vehicle had any passengers on board.

It is unclear what caused the South Lyon man to veer into the other lane, Werth said. Police are still investigating.

Eight Mile between Beck and Napier will be closed for several hours while investigators survey the scene, Werth said. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to find an alternate route.

Providence Hospital is less than five miles from the scene of the accident - why did they take the poor man all the way to Farmington - probably 20 minutes away!

They took him to Botsford because its a verified Trauma Center. The ambulance was required to take the patients there because of this. IMHO Botsford is a lackluster hospital and I would fight tooth and nail to not go there if I was injured. I would rather refuse treatment and go to St John-Providence in Novi.

Well EBC say what ever you want about Botsford. But I have high praise for them. Several years ago a relative was badly injured. He was close to loosing his life. They did a great job in his recovery and rehab. There are some flaws in every hospital.

Well Chris you can say what you want also, for my wife was taken to Botsford, and had to be transfered to Providence Southfield, because Botsford did not have the facilites to treat her. Why did EMS take her there....it was a longer trip, and cost us two ambulance trips. Southfield people told us that EMS vehicles have been doing this to charge higher fees. They went after the EMS Company that did not take my wife to Providence Park just 4 miles away, and has everything. Bob Valente

Bob: As written here, I have had similar experiences with Botsford Hospital, trauma center or not, their supportive care and philosophy is terrible. I’m willing to bet that a trip to U of M Hospital, also a trauma center, is almost the same in driving time, give or take a minute or two, from 8 Mile and Napier Rds. Unless I’m at the doorstep of Botsford and unable to speak for myself I personally would request another facility. I seriously doubt that EMS companies are attempting to take patients out of their way for higher fees.

Seriously, people, at least two have been killed, families have been devastated, and you want to have a public debate about which hospital is better? Did you even stop to think that their loved ones might read this and how your self-absorbed comments might affect them? SMH.
