A 96-year-old woman was found dead in her townhouse at Kings Mill Cooperative in Northville Township Monday, according to John Werth, Director of the Northville Township Public Safety Department. There have been no other injuries reported.
Firefighters from Northville Township, Plymouth and Livonia were at the scene of a fire on the 18000 block of Jamestown. The condominium cooperative is located off Northville Road, just south of Seven Mile Road.
One building was evacuated, according to Northville Township fire dispatchers.
The fire was called in by a maintenance worker who was replacing smoke alarm batteries in a neighboring unit and heard the smoke alarm going off.
Werth described what firefighters saw when they arrived on the scene to WXYZ-Channel 7.
"When firefighters arrived, they observed flames coming out of the window," Werth told Channel 7 reporter Kimberly Craig in an interview. "It was fully engulfed. They were immediately alerted to the fact that there was a female in the residence and they made entry into the residence."
Werth told radio station WWJ that this is the township's first fatal fire since 1978.
It is still too early to determine the cause and firefighters are investigating, Werth said.
