"When firefighters arrived, they observed flames coming out of the window," Werth told Channel 7 reporter Kimberly Craig in an interview. "It was fully engulfed. They were immediately alerted to the fact that there was a female in the residence and they made entry into the residence."

Werth told radio station WWJ that this is the township's first fatal fire since 1978.

It is still too early to determine the cause and firefighters are investigating, Werth said.
