The responding officer noticed a man near two vehicles at Main and Beal streets, according to the report. The officer called him over to his vehicle and asked him what he was doing. The man said he was trying to find a gas station to call for a ride after his girlfriend left him there, the report said.

The officer found the man had a warrant out from Wayne police, the report said. The officer searched his pockets and found a car key, a necklace, cigarettes, money and his wallet, the report said.

Another officer who arrived to assist said there was a stolen black Nissan Altima on Yerkes Street just south of Beal Street that was still warm and had been listed as stolen at 4:03 a.m. that day, according to the report.

The key from the man's pocket belonged to a Nissan, according to the report.

The officer asked if the man if he stole the vehicle. He said he did not but it was the man he was seen with earlier, the report said, and he gave a description of the man to the police.

The man said he was only walking with the other man and that he put a handful of change in his pocket to hold and must have also put the key there, the report said. However, according to the report, the key was found in the man’s front right pant pocket while the change was found in his front left pant and sweatshirt pockets.

An officer checked the key found in the man’s pocket with the stolen car and it worked, the report said. Police arrested the man on charges of receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle and larceny from a vehicle, according to the report.

Wayne police, which had taken the initial report and entered the vehicle as stolen, said they did not have enough evidence against this man or the other to charge them with unlawfully driving away an automobile, the report said. Wayne police recommended that Northvile police submit this case to the prosecutor based on charges of receiving and concealing stolen property.
