Court Blotter: Marijuana Possession, Larceny and Retail Fraud

A summary of court cases in the 35th District Court from July 21, 2011–July 27, 2011, covering Plymouth, Canton and Northville.

The following items are updates on cases in the 35th District Court, which serves Plymouth, Canton and Northville. Not all items, unless otherwise noted, reflect guilty pleas or convictions.

 

Michelle Monique Cowan, 33, Canton

  • Arraigned on a charge of simple larceny, a misdemeanor.
  • Pleaded not guilty on July 27, 2011.
  • Asked for a court-appointed attorney.
  • A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 10, 2011.

Wendy Ann Ruben, 51, Farmington Hills

  • Pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny on July 20, 2011.
  • Sentenced to six months nonreporting probation.
  • Given a delayed sentence under MCL 771.1. Under MCL 771.1, the court may delay sentencing for a period of not more than one year, allowing the defendant the opportunity to prove his or her eligibility for probation or leniency of the court. If it finds it necessary, the court may sentence the defendant during that period.

Amanda Kay Rhodes, 24, Ann Arbor

  • Violated probation on a charge of third-degree retail fraud.
  • Pleaded guilty to the first charge on Jan. 24, 2011.
  • Failed to serve nine days of her work detail.
  • Sentencing hearing scheduled for Aug. 3, 2011.
  • Charged with another instance of third-degree retail fraud.

Khalid Fakhri Zayed, 37, Canton

  • Violation of his delayed sentence on a possession of marijuana charge
  • Pleaded guilty to the original charge on April 5, 2011
  • Given possibility of 34 days in jail and extended probation

Billy Joe Etheridge, 52, Detroit

  • Charged with larceny in a building.
  • Pleaded guilty on July 27, 2011.
  • Presentence investigation and sentencing scheduled for Aug. 15, 2011.

Elizabeth Ann Marshall, 29, Westland

  • Pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and driving under a suspended license.
  • Sentenced to 12 months probation.
  • Deferred sentence under MCL 333.7411.
  • The court will discharge and dismiss without adjudication of guilt if she completes her probation.
  • The court will enter an adjudication of guilt if she violates probation.
