Despite Delays, Construction Back on Track in City of Northville

The construction on Main and Rogers will be complete before the start of school in September, city Public Works director says.

After a few setbacks and some delays thanks to Mother Nature, the construction on Main and Rogers streets is back on track, city Public Works Director Jim Gallogly said.

A big part of the hold up was an unforseen problem with the plan to strip a layer of an older part of the road and add on top of it. Gallogly explained that the older part had to be redone by Florence Cement Company of Shelby Township.

"That’s all done and behind us now. We’re in good shape," Gallogly said, adding that gravel will be laid down this week.

It costs $12,000 to replace but since it is mostly funded by federal dollars, it cost the city $3,000, he said.

"That’s not bad for getting a much better road," Gallogly added.

Weather was also a factor, with rain causing some delays.

Construction is expected to be completed on both streeets by the start of school, Gallogly said, as was initially planned. Classes start in Northville on Sept. 4.

The construction has drawn some complaints from neighbors about how long it's taking, safety, access to their property, parking and other conderns. Northville Patch blogger Tom Gudritz wrote about the project in his post titled

"This better be one fantastic new road!" he wrote.

In-depth updates on the road are available on the city's website.
