Newly Elected Councilman Plans to Help Northville's Needy

Sam Ekong says many are unaware of the needy in the City of Northville.

Sam Ekong will be the new face on Northville's city council, after his election to the position in an uncontested race Tuesday

Ekong, 59, City of Northville resident for almost 10 years, said this was his first run for political office.

"I love the City of Northville. It's a beautiful city. It's got its own charm. I want to help revive that charm," he said.

While meeting business owners and city residents during his campaign, Ekong said he inquired at the Northville Civic Concern, a local food pantry, to ask what he could do to help. Many are unaware that there are needy people in the city, he said.

"In the City of Northville, we could do a little bit more for the people who use their services," he said.

Ekong is an engineer by education and profession and has been for over 30 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington and a master’s degree in industrial/systems engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

He is also on the board of the Northville Democratic Club and has served in that position for more than two years, he said. He also serves on the board for his subdivision — Abbey Knoll. Ekong, who has a wife and a daughter, said he moved to the city from West Bloomfield and appreciates that neighbors know their neighbors in Northville.

"Everyone has their own project that they want done," he said about residents he met during his campaign.

Ekong told the League of Women Voters that he wants to increase cooperation between all Northville city and township businesses, continue improvement of city streets and infrastructure and work on parking problems. He said he'll have a better idea of what issue to tackle first during his four-year-term once he is officially on city council.

"I think too often we want to say things and say exactly what we'll solve," he said.

Ekong said he hasn't heard yet from city officials on when he'll start.
