Northville City Council Approves $18,000 in Business Assistance Grants

The Northville City Council approved several grants for downtown businesses Tuesday night.

The uses and amounts of the grants vary depending on what the businesses applied for and what was recommended by the Downtown Development Authority. In total, about $18,000 was approved for building landlords to use on improvements ranging from website development to awning replacements and building repairs such as repainting.

None of the amounts awarded cover the full cost of the projects, and the DDA did not recommend funding for a handful of the businesses that applied.

According to DDA documents, the following amounts were approved for "website development:"

The majority of the grants awarded were for commercial improvements. Here's a list of the amounts approved and uses, according to city documents:

1. , $2,150: Reshingling, replacement of both dormer windows and repairs to wood on dormer. The store also plans to repair its rear entry door and to paint the rear wall of the building.
2. , $425: Painting part of front of building in two colors.
3. , $535: Side door and hardware replacement. Repair and stain side deck. Applicant is also requesting funds for a freestanding sign for the front of the studio.
4. , $1,500: Installation of a new pergola, or arbor-like covering, on the rear side of building.
5. Masonic Association of Northville, $3,349.50: A hardscape upgrade at rear of building which includes improvements such as clearing old bricks and trees.
6. , $937.50: New rear entrance slab door. Replace wall mounted sign at rear entrance. "Recover existing rear canopy in same fabric/color." Replace signage.
7. , $2,692.50: Recplacement of three awnings, which include graphics.
8. , $1,467.50: Replacement of awnings
9. , $3,327.50: Awning replacements
10. Urban Optiques, $400: Awning replacement
