Northville Council Approves Parking Restrictions

The Northville City Council has unanimously approved parking restrictions on some city streets between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. to alleviate citizens’ concerns that parking narrowed two lanes of traffic, especially as accumulating snow pushed vehicles farther out in the street.

Liz Carter, who owns a home on Main Street, said at a recent council meeting that she and her neighbors had difficulty backing out of their driveways because of on-street parking, The Observer & Eccentric reports.

Police Chief Gary Gross told the City Council that residents on the north side of West Main Street between Star Manor and Rogers Street have called the police department several times to complain about parking in front of their homes.

Their complaints ranged from blocked driveways, limited sight distance due to cars parking too close to driveways and the inability for city service vehicles to get access to their homes for services such as leaf pickup.

Similar problems have been reported in the Rayson/Lake neighborhood.

An exception to the street parking ban will be granted for the Star Manor, a long-term care facility, because of limited capacity in the facility’s parking lot that must be reserved for handicapped visitors and emergency vehicles.

To accommodate those needs, an area on the south side of Main Street, east of the Early Childhood Center will be designated for all-day parking.
