Northville's Covered Walkway Costs $750,000

The majority of the project was paid for by Northville's Downtown Development Authority, and funding did not come from residential taxes.

The two-story covered walkway, also known as the Comerica Community Connection, that connects Main Street near Comerica Bank to the Marquis Parking Lot opened recently in downtown Northville.

However, the project is not fully complete. The plans include a plaza at the back end near the parking lot.

"We're hoping in the next three to four weeks the construction will start on it," said Lori Ward, Northville Downtown Development Authority (DDA) director.

She said the project is planned in coordination with a parking lot resurfacing project, so construction should take about four to six weeks.

Since the project is not complete, Ward said there is not a final total for its cost.

"The original contract amount was $697,000 dollars," she said. "There were some additions and some subtractions, so $750,000 is about how much construction will cost."

The money did not come from residential taxes. The Northville Area Development Corporation contributed $126,000 and the DDA paid for the rest, Ward said.

"It comes from tax increment financing that is collected from taxes paid for by commercial property owners in downtown," she said.

The DDA will also be installing signage at both entrances of the covered walkway.

Ward said a temporary banner should be up soon. In a couple of weeks, there will be signs that read "Comerica Community Connection" in raised brush metal letters over the canopy at the Main Street entrance and on the front and back of the glass at the back entrance, she said.

The projecting sign, for which the frame is already up, is part of the long-term wayfinding and signage plan for downtown and won't be ready until next year.
