Path to Maybury in Wayne County's Plan for Northville

Wayne County Commissioner Laura Cox says the county is working with Northville to get a non-motorized connection to Maybury State Park.

Laura Cox, Wayne County Commissioner for District 9, explained the county's current financial situation and upcoming projects at Northville's State of the Community Luncheon on Wednesday.

The county is working on getting a non-motorized connection to Maybury State Park on Beck Road. This is a city, township and county endeavour, Cox said at the luncheon at Meadowbrook Country Club.

She said $100,000 of Northville's park millage funds will be allocated to this project.

Wayne County, the City of Northville and Northville Township worked together before to create the Bennett Arboretum Pathway in 2011 (see YouTube video to the right).

That path, along the east side of Sheldon Road between Six and Seven Mile roads, is a non-motorized pedestrian route that provides a direct connection between the city and township.

This new path proposal will take pedestrians, runners and bikers directly into Maybury State Park.

Other projects around Northville include:

  • replacing the concrete walls near Baseline Road and Center Street this year
  • working on the intersection of Seven Mile and Sheldon roads in 2014
  • recent fix of Haggerty Road near Six Mile Road

Cox said Wayne County is facing a $160 million deficit.

"You all are so used to efficient government out here. And you hear this and can't wrap your head around what's happening in Wayne County," she said.

One of her goals is to get the county's budget online for tax payers to see. She said it's in the works and is being designed to be user-friendly.

"Everybody should have the ability to look and see how their taxes are spent," she said.
