State Sen. Colbeck to Constituents: Vote For Those Who Will Repeal 'Obamacare'

At a town hall meeting on Tuesday, Patrick Colbeck urged voters to learn more about the local impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Proudly wearing her Tea Party Patriot T-shirt, Donna Robinette attended a town hall meeting on Tuesday in Canton about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The Canton resident and about 40 others in the crowd heard state Sen. Patrick Colbeck (R-Canton) discuss the local effects of the landmark legislation. "Obamacare," whose provisions have been , troubles her.

"I think people are just not paying attention," Robinette said. "It's going to be horribly expensive."

She said she thinks there are alternatives to the mandate that should have been explored, and at Colbeck's town hall meeting, she was in the majority.

The freshman state senator said he called the town hall to discuss the hallmarks of the law but also to alert the public to Michigan Senate Bill 693, of which he was originally a co-sponsor but ultimately withdrew his support. The bill would create a state exchange in accordance with the federal mandate. The Affordable Care Act holds that if a state does not offer its own exchange, the federal government will create one for it.

"The House is going to be taking up SB 693," he said. "People need to be informed before that happens."

What does the Michigan Marketplace Act call for? It is "a bill to provide for the establishment of the MIHealth marketplace as a nonprofit corporation; to create the board of the MIHealth marketplace and prescribe its powers and duties; to provide for assessments and user fees; and to provide for the powers and duties of certain state and local governmental officers and agencies," according to language in SB 693. The state legislature's website has more details on the role of the marketplace.

Overall, Colbeck said he takes issue with the cost and what he sees as greater government control over individual rights and "reduced quality of care."

"It's the first time in the history of our country that you can be taxed for not doing something," he told the crowd. "This is truly all about control."

He encouraged people in the audience to read the language of the bill. He also encouraged people to apply for a waiver, challenge the act in court, pay the fine and elect representatives that will repeal it. He also said he hoped House representatives will vote down the state exchange and "re-focus" it.

One man in the audience asked, "Senator, do you envision a kind of black market for health care?"

Colbeck said it was a certainty.

Another man in the audience said, "I look at this as the last nail in the coffin of freedom."

On the federal level, some in the House of Representatives have unsuccessfully tried to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act 33 times, drawing criticism from Democrats about cost. The Obama administration has long held that the act expands affordable health care to people who might not otherwise have it.

I'm honestly not sure how the Republicans have managed to stir up this kind of angry negative sentiment over legislation that brings the United States in line with ALL the other developed countries in the world. We have the most expensive, most inefficient and most unequal healthcare of all developed countries, with 50 million uninsured, families who are one diagnosis away from bankruptcy, and people dying without access to basic preventative healthcare. Universal healthcare has not bankrupted the UK, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland etc etc. Neither does anyone in those countries cry for the loss of democracy. In a superb exercise in spin, the Republicans have even managed to convince people that Affordable Care Act, with an individual mandate wasn't something they themselves proposed several years ago. If it wasn't so evil to force people to vote against their best interests, I might almost admire their strategy.

A couple of questions about this story-where was this town hall meeting held? and a crowd is 40 people? It sounds less like a town-hall meeting and more like a tea party meeting.

Canton. It was on the events lists that Patch does.

Pathetic attempt by the rethuglicans to scare the sheeple into voting against their own interests.
Getting more people covered and giving them access to preventive care will have a huge effect on lowering health care costs. To the rethuglicans, if the ACA is not a viable solution, then what is? What will get costs under control?

Sad that the best you can come up with is a bunch of snarky remarks to someones post. But thats all you have left in your bag of thoughts.

WE ARE A REPUBLIC!! The majority of Americans did NOT want the Affordable Care Act when they voted on it and a majority still want it repealed! We elect our officials to act on our behalf and they failed miserably. Senator Debbie Stabenow stated in an interview that the people "have to just trust that we know what's best for them". We didn't elect her to tell us what is best for us but to REPRESENT us. Medicare and medicaid are broke and need to be fixed. Now government leaders are adding another underfunded entitlement. How many of those 50 million people are uninsured by choice or because of illegal residency? Or never even applied for public insurance. Now they're taking 500 BILLION dollars out of medicare to pay for Obamacare, how does that help those who require the most care? And if Universal Healthcare is so great, why are people from those countries you list above coming here for medical treatment and complaining because they cannot always get the medications that we are blessed with here in the U.S.? Yes, I know this first hand. I fear being in their shoes. NO ONE is forcing ME to vote for how THEY want me to vote. I WILL be voting for the country's best interest.

I think if people were less lazy and read trhe affordable health care law they might be more informed than if they just sit back as listen to sound bites from people who have agendas.
Have any of you talked to people directly in the health care field about this? Don't take you cues from the biggest blowhards on TV or radio.

A little research and less reliance on talking points would tell you who the uninsured are. Seventy five percent of them are working families. Half are those individuals and families who earn less than the poverty level ($22K for a family of 4). The poor economy, rising costs, employers dropping insurance plans, and insurance companies rejecting those with pre-existing conditions has resulted in this travesty. I'm sure you realize that in addition to the 50,000 estimated who die annually as a result of no healthcare, we do in fact pay the costs of those who have no alternative but to turn up at an ER when they have a health crisis. That is the most expensive form of health care!
As for the flood of Scandinavians into the US to receive healthcare... I charge you to provide that data! The deluge of Canadians into the US is nothing but a myth. Obviously the US has some great medical facilities, and if someone were willing to pay the full costs to come here for treatment, that's fine. But that would only apply to those able to pay the enormous cost! Have you ever asked yourself why an MRI here costs $1000 and in France only $200? The amusing thing about 'the majority of Americans' is they strongly favor the individual provisions of the ACA -- coverage for pre-existing conditions, allowing children to stay on parents' policies to 26, fixing the cost donut-hole. It's the name, 'Obamacare' that makes then angry, because they've been told that it is a Socialist plot!

@Diana Kory, There are no "$500 billion in cuts" to Medicare. Do your homework, don't listen to Fox News as your only news source if you want to know the facts.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/fact-checking-the-gop-debate-500-billion-in-cuts-to-medicare/2011/06/14/AGsnGAVH_blog.html Colbeck is a tea partier. What did everyone expect to come out of this meeting? I wrote yesterday that this is exactly what to expect, and I got what I expected.

Diana: You need to research your speaking points because they are wrong. The majority of the people you speak about do not want to REPEAL the whole Act: When offered choices besides repealing or not, over 47% supported keeping the law as is or with changes. Only 23% percent supported repealing the Act with nothing to replace it, what the GOP is now offering (Kaiser Family Foundation 2/12). When given options the outright appeal group falls short of a majority. The Act does not take $500 billion out of the current Medicare budget, but reduces the growth of Medicare spending by just over $500 billion over 10 years. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects Medicare spending will raise to $929 billion in 2020, an increase of $430 million over actual spending in 2009. Another fact that the Tea party and the GOP don’t want you to know is that the Obamacare will save $200 billion for Medicare by 2016 and $208 billion for Medicare patients by 2020 (Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services) http://www.cms.gov/apps/files/ACA-savings-report-2012.pdf. ConcernedParent, nice reply in pointing out the talking points rather than the facts.

For the record Mr. Colbeck there are hundreds of examples of people being asked to pay taxes for not doing something. The tax system has incentives and penalties for all types of behaviors. In addition the government mandates that I must purchase insurance to drive a car, to have a mortgage, to own a business, etc..
When will you Koch backed ideologues stop the hyperbole?
