11 Northville High School Students Awarded Girl Scouts Gold Award

They were recognized by the school board this week for their achievement.

Eleven students were recently given the highest Girl Scout honor - the Gold Award.

The girls were recognized by the Northville Board of Education at its meeting Tuesday. The award has been bestowed on "young women who have made a difference both locally and globally," according to the Girls Scouts website.

Almost half of the 24 girls awarded the honor last week at an Eastern Michigan University ceremony were from Northville Public Schools, said parent Valerie Niemiec. One in four girls in Northville schools participate in the scouts, she said.

The girls who earned the Gold Award include:

  • Emily Deng, junior, conducted Chinese Cultural Awareness classes for Northville Kids Club.
  • Sierra Fish, junior, conducted an after school recycling program at Northville elementary schools.
  • Maria Gutowski, sophomore, renovated a room at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries domestic violence shelter.
  • Kayla Hagan, senior, renovated a room at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries domestic violence shelter.
  • Erica Halverson, sophomore, renovated a room at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries domestic violence shelter.
  • Jennifer Jones, 2011 graduate, installed a meditative walking labyrinth at .
  • Megan McCrohan, junior, renovated a room at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries domestic violence shelter.
  • Elisabeth Moore, junior, conducted a summer dance workshop for the Troy Boys and Girls Club.
  • Miranda Niemiec, junior, developed the program at Northville High School.
  • Sandra Pui, junior, renovated a room at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries men's dormitory.
  • Kelly Wright, junior, renovated a room at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries domestic violence shelter.
