After a series of back-and-forth negotiations – between the Board of Education and the Teamsters Local 214, which represents the district's transportation workers – the district has reached a decision that it will privatize its bus services.
District officials are expected to formally make the announcement later today.
The union had until 8 a.m. Thursday to accept or reject a counterproposal made by the district. Details about the counterproposal were not released at the time of publication.
"The Teamsters local turned down the district’s counteroffer," said board president Joan Wadsworth. "The District is preparing a press release."
That release, with further information, is expected sometime today.
At a , the board voted to privatize if the union did not accept its counterproposal by Thursday.
The board heard from community members who were concerned about privatizing with Durham School Systems at the Tuesday meeting.
