BREAKING: Northville Public Schools to Privatize Bus Systems

Teamsters Local 214 has rejected the school district's counterproposal.

After a series of back-and-forth negotiations – between the Board of Education and the Teamsters Local 214, which represents the district's transportation workers – the district has reached a decision that it will privatize its bus services.

District officials are expected to formally make the announcement later today.

The union had until 8 a.m. Thursday to accept or reject a counterproposal made by the district. Details about the counterproposal were not released at the time of publication.

"The Teamsters local turned down the district’s counteroffer," said board president Joan Wadsworth. "The District is preparing a press release."

That release, with further information, is expected sometime today.

At a , the board voted to privatize if the union did not accept its counterproposal by Thursday.

The board heard from community members who were concerned about privatizing with Durham School Systems at the Tuesday meeting.

I'd like to know more about this decision and why it was made. I'm concerned that we are nickle-and-diming here, sending money to a company based out of state. Obviously if they re-hire people it will be at significantly reduced benefits -- only the employee is covered, not their family. I'm also becoming concerned at the Board's behavior -- threatening to bring in an Emergency Financial Manager which would remove the ability of parents and the community to have any influence in their children's education, hiring administrative staff on large salaries, and approving $600k in donations toward astro-turf at the High School?

Who do I contact to file a complaint about a northville public school bus driver. I was just almost run off the road by the driver if bus number 9813. She was the 4th vehicle at a red light and decided to get over Tito the right and try to get in front of me. She would not back off and almost hit me while I had a 6 month old in the back seat.
