Children's Art Featured at Northville Square

The Northville Public Schools display will be showcased until Wednesday.

Pre-kindergarten student Elizabeth Felosak gets pretty excited when she describes  artwork she and fellow students have created in class that is now being featured at Northville Square.

"That's mine," Elizabeth said, pointing to a decorative ornament atop a tree. Behind the tree is a display explaining how the students made their ornaments, painted and glazed them.

The Northville Public Schools students' projects are part of the district's Early Childhood Education and Extended Day Programs department's sixth-annual Children's Exhibit. Some of the art projects are done by children as young as 2, while others are done by fifth-graders. The event ties in with April, the Month of the Young Child.

The goal, explained program coordinator Eileen Freeman, is "to see the value of what they do everyday in the classroom." She said things as simple as playing with one another are learning experiences for the children.

In these formative years, Freeman explained that it's important to engage them in such creative mediums and to give them an opportunity to be praised for it.

"It was just precious to see children showing their projects to their families," she said.

Sandi Mueller, studio teacher, was one of the people who got to see the class projects evolve. Some of the projects began as far back as November before culminating into the highlighted displays in Northville Square.

"It's very powerful for children," she said. In order to develop the projects, "teachers began observing children as they began building relationships."

Mueller talked about one display in which students, who began to notice their physical differences, documented their experience. They photographed their eyes – which ranged in shape, size and color – and created a collage.

The students' projects will be displayed until Wednesday on the top level of Northville Square.

In conjunction with the event, the department will be accepting donations for the charity.
